you whoop the ass of your colleges at work? Like the people at the colleges you attended or the ones in your town? Either way, Wow, that's a lot of ass to whoop! OR did you mean colleages? :)

I do have to diagree with you that it takes no skill to be good in Quake, just listen to 999's ramblings.... And have you ever tried to kill me with a rocket launcher? I bet you couldn't do it in one shot ;)

Jaybot: that the point!! :)

You cant (well I cant :) ) kill anyone in Quake with one shot with the rocket launcher - that just too fustrating for me - its a rocket launcher for gods sake!.

and, fair play, I cant spell, especially after four pints of Thatcher Somerset Scrumpy :)

The iPAQ thing, yeah you have a point - I can only press one button at a time. It sucks, but thats why the PQ control method works best for me :)

Luck?

Hehe, I love when people say that.

Regarding counterstrike, it seems when 1.0 came out, the whole game just got "generalized". All the weapons became instantly "good" in terms of the learning curve, far from the realism it started out with. I remember when you'd have to learn to tame the AK and fire short controlled bursts of 3 rounds. How about that AWP? Does a footshot really warrant a kill? At least in Quake a footshot will send your opponent flying in the proper direction according to the laws of physics. Now, a dead on rocket blast *should* kill a guy in real life, but we're playing a game here, so I'll cut it a little slack ;) Besides, it would make for slow boring games if noone could capitalize on the items in the map, aka juice patterns or running the board. The armor is there for a reason ;)

Ah well, I need to fireup counterstrike again. Carpediem has been asking for a challenge.

999: I know exactly what you mean, it just when it comes to realism and settings I prefer CS (check out http://come.to/clangbh) - designed (if you can call it that) by me!!

Im the first to admit that it aint perfect tho!

I KNOW the its more than luck, but I seem to play better at work on Quake than I do on CS, but I still prefer CS.

I think thats why im moving toward Day of Defeat - its a very new mod, but is still very fun.

Also, they fixed the power of the AWP now, but I get the point :)

No, no, I was being serious, you couldn't kill me with a rocket launcher in RealLife(tm), so it IS realistic! :)

Has anyone tried Infiltration 2.85 for Unreal Tournament? That is just the most badass mod I have ever seen. Real world weapons and tactics.

Watch your loadout, or your ass will be so heavy you can't even walk. You can only run for short periods (depending on your loadout) and if you get out of breath, your aiming is severely degraded.

You can lean around corners, to take a quick peak or toss a grenade.

You can lie down to hide in the grass.

One shot kills to the head.

The maps are are of weird because there aren't any "random" placement of weapons, ammo and armor. What you bring into battle is all you get. so you MUST salvage weapons, armor and ammo from fallen comrades or the enemy.

I can't even begin to list all the new stuff it supports. It isn't even Unreal Tournament anymore; it could be a stand-alone game.

I just haven't been too impressed with Counterstrike for some reason. It is very well written I must admit.

On the ipaq button thing:

It's really ironic, but the iPAQ dpad and button arrangement is absolutely fabulous ;) (For PocketQuake that is)

The firebutton is mapped to the Action button. For those non-iPAQers out there, the Action button is actually the Control Pad. You depress it "Inwards" to activate the Action buton.

This makes for extremely comfortable play in both the landscape and portrait modes. Your thumb never needs to leave the Dpad, and allows you to hold the iPAQ in any way you feel most comfortable.

I think the extra options casio users have with buttons, the whole DOOM4CE thing, and disregard for Stylus use in games has lead to these oddball digital pan configs I've seen floating around. Ideally, you'd want a true analog way of looking around, not a set pan rate, as well as the ability to look up and down.

If you're not using the Analog Mlook, I suggest you go back to DOOM, as that's all your essentially playing, but in 3D.

I really take my Quake serioulsy :D
Last modification: 999 - 04/02/01 at 14:37:07

Actually, I NEVER play Unreal Tournament, the wapons, models and maps are just kind of cheesy. I just play the Infiltration mod.

Wow... I was wondering when someone would post a message about the poll! :)

In my defence, as plenty of people have pointed out, it is only a poll. It's meant as a completely unscientific, harmless bit of fun, that's all.

Of course, there is an element of controversy to it (I try and make the polls at least reasonably interesting!) and I accept that I may have gone too far this time. I do accept that the poll may be a little premature considering how young Pocket Quake is and, yes, the Jornada release news item was downright cheeky/stupid (delete as you see fit).

Dan, I apologise if you feel that this poll in some way degrades your work, for which I (and everyone else) have enormous respect. In a nutshell, you were the one who achieved what seemed at one point completely impossible.

Randall:
"Meanwhile, I am still going to bitch about the low-quality games they try to pawn off. How am I supposed to respect the opinions/reviews of a site that caters such trash?"

I tried very hard to ignore that comment, but I couldn't just let it pass! ;)

I don't "pawn off" games, I announce them. I try and be fair to all titles, even if they do happen to look like "trash" to you.

Let me just make it clear that I don't make any profit from the vast majority of news announcements. The companies/developers/authors don't pay me to announce games, nor do they share any profits with me... despite all the begging letters! :)

The only way I make money from the site is the adverts (Jimmy Software, PocketGear) and the PocketGear affiliate links (the "Buy this Game" links in the listings; unfortunately for me, the PocketGear links are very rarely up in time for the announcements).

Also:
"I guess my point is that there "doesn't need to be news every day"."

Nope, there doesn't, and I wish there wasn't. It would make my life a lot easier... :)

However, the sorry truth is that people keep on sending me news and rather than wait a few days, I tend to post it as soon as I can. I can only apologise if this isn't to everyone's liking.

Anyway, back to Pocket Quake...

Dan (and helpers), please keep it up. You're doing an amazing job! :)

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org
