Wow, you had like a real job in he gaming industry ,well, sort of. I'm impressed! Wish I could be as cool as 999. Alas, it was never meant to be. :(

Quake allows you the ability to adjust pitch up/down to fire a weapon at a target. That is one of the significant changes Quake made of gamplay of since Doom.

But if you aren't using mlook (or any other type of up/down look), you can still hit a target that is on a lower/higher plane than you, much like Doom. All you have to do is line up a target horizontally, and the game will align the target vertically. I guess this is one of those "undocumented features" of Quake.

I am not sure if this is Deathmatch specific or not.

The engine is designed that if the player is using pitch control, then THAT is the assumed target area. This allows players to kill with splash damage (aiming at the feet).

Any little tap of pitch control will "disable" this auto-aiming feature, since the game assumes the player wants precise control of targeting.

Last modification: randall - 04/03/01 at 01:28:59

Randall:

You're most likely right. In all honesty, I've never played the single player Quake. My first experience with it was on the iPAQ. I didn't notice the autopitch aiming, but if you're doing it, and in Single Player, I've got to believe ya.

I can tell you now however, that it's not a feature in DM. It would be pointless, and would give many players to huge a golden opportunity if they were to master it. As it stands, on DM6, If I'm down the hallway looking directly at the Red Armor on the second floor, just above the Rocket Launcher, firing a rocket doesn't come anywhere close to my target, standing just behind the armor. The SuperShotgun does, but that's because of it's spray pattern.

Btw, I setup a multiplayer match to make sure there isn't some sort of entity tracking on a rocket fired at the target on a different plane.

Must be a Single Player thing.

Actually, i've never tested it on SP. I've only done it on Deathmatch against a bot.

I even tested this a while ago, cuz it seemed crazy-weird. I thought I was imagining things.

I made a map, a single large room with a platform.

I put an info_player_deathmatch spawnpoint down below and one on the platform. I enclosed the upper spawnpoint in a cage so the bot couldn't "move" and I could get a clear shot at him.

I placed a rocketlauncher in the map and away I went. The rockets were firing straight at the wall ahead of me, until I lined up with the bot horizontally. Then the rockets shot up about 128 units and gibbed the bot.

It also works if the bot is down below in a "cage", and the player stands on the platform.

It sounds retarded, I know, and definately something somebody could easily exploit. But I have the test map if anyone wants to try it for themselves.

That's why I KNOW it's not splash damage. 128 units is pretty drastic, especially when I see the rocket fly right up his ass. It must have been a 45 degree change of pitch!

But it doesn't work if you are actively using mlook. Try running around a few maps without mlook for a while and try to target the bots without looking up/down. This is only noticeable on maps with varying planes. Maybe 999a might work since it has platforms in a super-tight arena.(dunno, haven't tried)

Really, this isn't that important. It's more of a curiosity than anything.

Regarding the PocketGamer poll, I didn't take it as offensive, personally or otherwise. I feel it is innacurate and may not reflect the actual quality of the game, but still, it's not a big issue. I don't think a poor poll will seriously hurt Pocket Quake sales or damage my profit margin. Heck, we could do with a little less bandwidth anyway. :) I check the Pocket Gamer site daily, and it has always proven a good source of information. One thing to keep in mind is that it seems to me that in the last 4 months more Pocket PC games have been released than were previously created since the release -of Windows CE in 1997! In other words, until now, if you didn't report every new game, then there wouldn't be news for weeks at a time. Now that there is real news, Pocket Gamer will have the ability to pick and choose what to report.

Randall, etc, maybe I've been doing something wrong all these years, but you have to adjust pitch to shoot up or down to actually hit a target that is not on the same plane you are. Are you thinking of Doom?

Dan East

Hey 999, maybe you could hide my name in an illustration, like one of those 3D Eye puzzles :). JK, I completely understand. What else was I going to say? Oh, can we talk about fish and tacos now? Dan replied and his replies always bring a sense of finality (what's the real word I'm looking for?)
