Best Pocket PC?

Best Pocket PC?

I have a question. If I were to get a Pocket PC for gaming, which one should I get?

Don't buy a PocketPC for gaming.

And don't get anyone started on "which PPC is best". It boils down to preference.

Go to the local computer store and test a few models out. Don't expect help from the clerks- They don't appear to know ANYTHING and are dumbfounded when you ask the simplist question. (CompUSA, Cicuit City).

Look online for reviews and read everything you can. Then go back to the computer store and test again.

I am asking for personal preference, hopefully to get some users who have used it for gaming. I'm hoping to get people to say the ups and downs of each Pocket PC so I can decide because I REALLY am not having fun with PQ and my Jornada 548.

I personally own a Casio E-125 and I love it. My first choice was the iPaq but it was out of stock when I was at the store. My Casio works great, no problems like dust under the screen or only one button pressed at a time. The screen is also larger, brighter and more colorful (16 bit instead of the iPaq's 12 bit screen). My battery lasted 2 days of use no problems, I used it for about 5 hours each day, and that was pure gaming, using full bright screen, speakers, and running off my highly intensive MicroDrive 1GB. With the same setup I can watch a full 2 hour movie that I encoded, full bright, off of my MicroDrive with much battery left remaining. All games run fast and the controls are good. That's the point of view of my Casio, since i don't have an iPaq I can't bash it, all I know is hear-say and conjecture.

Get a gameboy if you want to play games.. its much cheaper.

If you can live with the 12bit color on the IPaq, I would get that. But I think it's kinda cheesy, so I went with the e125. Clocked at 200mhz its not that much slower than an out of the box IPaq.

The iPaq is undoutably fast for these latest sets of games, like PocketQuake and PocketHexen, because of it's memory accessing speeds. Other games, specifically anything made by Jimmy, such as Turjah, work well on the Casio because of it's speed in 2D graphics. Neither one is faster, neither one is slower. If you want a big screen, take the Casio, if you want expandability get the iPaq. THat's basically what it boils down to. But of course, you can get a CF to PC Card adaptors for you Casio now :)
Last modification: Moose Master - 03/29/01 at 13:25:56

Once again, go find a review somewhere that covers all the devices. I am partial to Casio because I own one and feel very comfortable with it.

Each device has it's strengths and weaknesses.

Playing games isn't a reason to buy a PPC, not for me anyway. But whatever turns your crank...

Buy an iPAQ. I own a Casio e-125, and am beyond dissappointed. The iPAQ never has to comprimise. except for the screen. Its 25% faster out of the box and can be oc'ed through software. it is hands-down the best looking, and the best feeling ppc on the market. that's my story and im sticking to it!

Phat is also 12 years old. So his PPC is basically acting as a supercharged gameboy.

He also uses it to keep a schedule of his naptimes :)

Last modification: randall - 03/29/01 at 16:37:20

Hey, don't mock the young. I'm 14 and I just released an SH-3 version of PQ which no seemed to be able to do. By the way, I heard the iPAQ has problems though.

This Jornada is just REALLY annoying. Can't even be overclocked, can it?

15, i use it for PIM's like you wouldn't believe. I own a casio, not an iPAQ. When i lost all my data testing Quake, i lost EVERYTHING! i had to get all my assignments and all the phone numbers, and all my appointments and stuff. it took 7 hours! My contacts DB is over 1 meg! just a gameboy? no.

Jay, congrats. You are the badass. And your only 14? Holy cow man... What an accomplishment.

Lessee. At 14 I was learning BASIC on an Apple IIe, and never prooduced much of anything. I wouldn't have even dreamed of debugging a port. :)
