File Compression...

Postby XIDKnightX » Mar 30, 2001 @ 12:52pm

Can someone tell me how to zip up my registered pak1 file like the demo pak was zipped that came with pocket quake in order to make it smaller, right now its too big for me to waste all that space on my handheld but id like to have the complete pak so how do i do this? i know it has something to do woth a gz extension.

Jornada 545 only has 16 megs of total onboard memory, so it would be pretty difficult to satisfy the requirements for PocketQuake.

Try any one of these:

Completely clean your system of third party apps, and other files that did not ship with the device. (This isn't realistic)

Get a storage card or some other type of storage medium. I don't think the 545 can take a microdrive since it has a type I CF slot.

Get the registered version of Quake and make a custom PAK file. Then gzip the whole thing. It'll reduce as low as 6 megs easily, but you'll only have one or two maps to play.

Dump ALL of the BSP files from both pak files, except any BSP that starts with "b_". Those are basically cheesy model files, and needed in quite a few maps.

BSPs are map files. Just add/remove the maps you want to play.

This will substantially drop the file size down.

The remaining files can be repacked and gzipped if you like. Just ensure you put the maps in the \quake\id1\maps\ folder.

Last modification: randall - 03/30/01 at 13:14:17

yes it is possible to run on the 545, someone just said they got about 2fps on it in the SH3 MARKII thread. So have fun!

Actually I take that back, it was with the original SH3 build and James said: It works on my 545 but is really not playable. I set the memory to have 9.07 MB free program and 1.94 MB free storage. With some more tweaking, I can free a lit bit more RAM but I thought 9MB was enough.

I plan on getting the 548 as soon as the new camaras become available but I'm tempted to wait to see what, if anything, HP will do with bluetooth.

Nonetheless, the question was whether it *could* run on a 545 and answer is yes. Is is playable? Not really.

However with Yodas new build, it might run at a playable speed, since he's getting about 5.0 fps on the 548
