Hey Ronan, my middle name is Ronen (it's Israeli). It should work for MIPS processor (that's what I use), but 8Mb may not be enough. Try to do anything to make it 9Mb, that's when it works. Oh, and with only 66Mhz, I doubt you'll be able to endor the low fps, nor the huge load times (with 150Mhz, the small pak took exactly 15 minutes to open, whereas the big pak takes 40 seconds, huge difference).

I think the symbol is black and white, in which case it would not work.

Quake uses a palette of 256 24 bit colors. The iPaq, like all other color Pocket PCs, supports 16 bit color. However, at the hardware level the 16 bit color is reduced to 12 bits, probably by the LCD driver hardware itself.

Dan East

In other words Pocket Quake reduces Quake's 24 bit color to 16 bit. The iPaq hardware further reduces it to 12 bit.

Dan East

But there's only 256 colors displayed simultaneuosly, right? (Which would mean a 256 gray-scale device would work?)

No. Pocket Quake only supports devices with 15 or 16 bits per pixel (RGB 555 / 565 encoding). The palette limitation of quake (256 colors) has nothing to do with the actual number of colors (or shades of grey) that the hardware can render. The total possible color combinations with 16 bit color is 65,536, compared to the 256 possible "colors" of that greyscale device. If the device's display hardware interfaces with RGB 555 or 565 encoding (so that the hardware translates it to greyscale, similar to the way the iPaq reduces it to 12 bit), then it will work.

Dan East
