Pocket Quake/ PokéQuak

Pocket Quake/ PokéQuak

Postby Snuffkin » May 15, 2001 @ 11:32am

I was wondering when Pocket Quake was first started to develop cause i got something similar which i started ages ago (about 3 years) 960K and is not quite Quake but it works on IMB machines. It has some work to do and i've lost the basic mod data but that was mostly sorted anyway. I'm not gonna go at you for plagarism cause they're both free and different end results anyway.

Pocket Quake is merely a port of the PC game Quake. Quake was released in 1996 at the latest. I'm sure someone that reads these boards may know its history better, and perhaps the exact release date (and the release date of the source). I can assure you that whatever game you are thinking of came after Quake, and it would certainly be more likely that it would be guilty of plagiarizing Quake. In fact, it may simply be comprised of custom levels which run in the Quake engine. Quake represented one of the great milestones of gaming, and was the first to prove the type of 3D technology that at least half of the modern PC / Console games are based off of.

Dan East
Last modification: Dan East - 05/15/01 at 11:05:59

Plagarism is copying a written document word for word. I have no idea how plagarism would have any involvement in porting a game in which the source code is available (for both the original game and the ported game). I'd love to watch this court trial, like it would hold up for more than 5 minutes. I'd like a little bit more information on this previous game that was "started ages ago ... and is not quite Quake..." as this sounds completely bogus.

Now that I reread (for the 4th time) the original post again, I think I understand it a little more. It sounds like Snuffkin started writing a game around 3 years ago, maybe called "960K", that was never finished but was "mostly sorted" out, that looked sorta like Quake (which was released years before his project even started), which ran on IMB machines (whatever they are), and very fortunately for me he is not going to raise copyright issues against me for modifying GPL'ed software to build for another platform. Whew, for a second I thought I personally was going to be in very big trouble for something id Software did wrong. ~

Dan East

It still wouldn't be plagurism. At the most extreme, it would be a copyright issue.

Yet the fact remains that id software maintains the copyright of Quake, it's logo (which I noticed poke'Quack blatantly uses), and all associated media (sounds, images, etc.)

That is where the Quake part of pocketQuake comes in.

As far as the POCKET part of the name goes, PocketQuake is named that simply for the reason that it is Quake ported exclusively to PocketPC (Win CE 3.0+)

Poke'Quack is a blatant ripoff of Poke'mon, which is short for "Pocket Monster". At that level, neither has anything to do with PocketPC and probably very little to do with id's Quake.

I'm sorry Dan, but it looks like you are going to jail for a VERY long time.~
