Pocket Quake II?

Pocket Quake II?

Postby Russ Smith » Mar 14, 2001 @ 11:50am

Does Quake II use a new engine or is it just more levels for Quake?  (I'm wondering whether Quake II would run on Pocket Quake.)<br><br>  [He who likes to ask too much, just in case it isn't.]

I hope it's a joke, a BIG hairy joke. Otherwise, someone hasn't played Quake/Quake2.

Oh yeah, BIG differences. The polys alone would kill it (models, maps contain more polys), not to mention all the other improvements/enhancments.

To answer the question: Quake and Quake II are different engines. There are many addons and mods for Quake, though.

I wonder if Q3 Arena would render 1 frame/minute on my Casio *g*

It isn't just a matter of cutting back on the graphics. Is the Quake II source code even available?<br><br>Sin is an alternative since it uses a modified Quake II engine, and the source code is available. There are command variables that allow the user to modify the visual quality, like forcing an 8-bit palette, no dynamic lighting,  no colored lighting, no transparent effects, etc.<br>Again, this engine is significantly different than Quake.<br><br>It would be a huge undertaking, but there were people who said Quake would never run on PocketPC.<br><br><br><br>

Going on that tangent, what about Half-Life? It's open-source (to the best of my knowledge) and there are many mods availabel for it, including the popular Counter Strike. I've never played either, but I know there are many who play at least one of them to this day. And it wouldn't be as far a stretch, as Half-Life's engine was a [heavily] modified Quake I engine. Hmm, wonder what else would make a good conversion.

First of all, those games require a 200MHz+ processor to run, and that's very choppy at that. Quake required a 486 66MHz to run, and look at how poor it runs, with no optimisations it was unplayable on Casios, but with right now it only runs at 7 with an O/C Casio, 10 w/ iPaq

Those games will run on less than than a P200. Sin ran reasonably well on a P133. I'm sure it would run on an even slower processor with all the effects disabled.<br><br>Sin was also written for Win95 from the start, whereas Quake had it's roots deeply planted in DOS and was later "updated" to Win95.<br><br>Where am I going with this? Absolutely nowhere. Anyway, it would be nice to see these project being considered, because the newer, faster PocketPCs are on their way.<br><br>PocketPCs have been available for nearly a year(?), and Quake is just now getting ported.<br><br>I have a Quake II box lying around here somewhere, so I'll see what the min requirements are. Still, comparing MIPS, SH3 and ARM to an x86 is like comparing apples to oranges.<br>

What about a game like Duke Nukem 3d, original.  A p133 notebook easily did multiplayer.

The requirements for Duke were pretty low from what I remember.<br><br>Everything I read says Quake (the original) requires a Pentium (not true) and DOS. WinQuake required a Pentium and Win95. Quake II required a P90 and Win95.<br><br>I am going to run both versions on a P60 and see what happens to FPS.

Duke Nukem sounds like a realistic goal to convert to Pocket PC. The controls could work like they do in Doom. Wasn´t Duke and Doom very similar in gameplay and requirements?
