The only problem is that no matter how I try, I can't get a net connection through USB (the only cable I've got) with SOCKS4 or SOCKS5 apps, much less Pocketquake, which didn't support them at last count.

What kind of server are you planning on using to run this? Do you need a volunteer? After Aug. 25th, I'll be back at Mason, and that means two things: full-time access for a server, and a static IP on a pretty quick connection. No guarantees, but I could always help out if I can't participate myself.

I can see everyone trying to connect at the same time. Lag. Disconnections. Slowdowns. Screams. Chaos.

Thomas.. that would be cool. We'll probably schedule the games, and the people that are going to be in them.. (random draw).. then we don't have 30000 people trying to connect... maybe we could get some live stats thing going on the pocketquake page :).. but i'm dreaming.. we'll see what happens..

Dan will probably be releasing an update before this tourny to get improve support for proxy's..

but this all depends on how many people would be playing.
Well, I'm all for hosting, and if we get proxy support I'm all about playing. Without proxy, though, you'll have to wait for me to sell my third kidney so I can afford a RAM upgrade. Or try and squeeze it into a meg and a half again. Ouch, that was unpleasant.

Dan had spoken earlier about being able to rig up a server that checks for a client's version and rejects any that are too high. It's also possible that he could add several random checks during the network process to the client, and as long as he doesn't give out the source we'd never know. It would require a custom version. Besides, it's probably just going to be 6 or 7 of us anyway, so what's the likelihood that someone'll cheat?

Yeah, I'll have to build a custom version of the server for the desktop machine that will use some technique(s) to validate a PQ client. Since I won't distribute the binary I won't have to release the source. I also feel that we need to keep the official game server anonymous to everyone but the actual players drawn for that round. Otherwise it would be susceptible to attacks, or at least the attempts of people trying to connect that aren't allowed to compete.

Dan East
