Thanks for you help. As well as your permission to use PQ source to make a better version of quake.

Well, you don't need my permission - the Quake source code is covered under the GNU license. :)

Dan East

Considering the Dreamcast is running WinCE, I would think it wouldn't be too hard to get multiplayer working.

QuakeDC relies on D3D and DInput, neither of which is available on the current lot of Pocket PC devices. I suppose the file i/o would come over pretty easily, although the DC version of CE supports asynchronous file reads and that isn't supported on the PocketPC. The save game code would writes to the Sega VMU, but that should be an easy workaround.

Not all DC games use CE (most don't). There are 2 SDK available to game devs to use. The Sega SDK and the MS CE SDK. The DC doesn't contain CE itself, the entire CE OS is booted from the game disc when you load the game. Just like your PC, it just loads an image and jumps to an address and starts executing code.

i would suggest you don't even try a port of PQ to Dreamcast. Anything, ANYTHING that runs WinCE sucks on dreamcast. Look at the freakin Web browser, it runs wince and do u see how slow it runs. :-/ my suggestion is to get the source of quake dc since it HAS to be available under the GNU liscensing. So find that source, use that.

Chuck,

I'm not overly familiar with the GNU licensing agreement, but I doubt that QuakeDC source code would need to be released. The resulting executable was never distributed to the public, so does the source need to be made available?

The source was delivered to licensed Sega Dreamcast developers on Sega's private website, but I don't think that would force the code to be disseminated to the unwashed masses, would it?

For example, if I took the Quake source and ported it to some oddball CPU, as long as I didn't distributed the .exe I shouldn't have to give my modifications to anyone. If I shared it with people who had the same oddball CPU at my company, I would be required to share the source with them, but with no one else, right? Maybe that's the same with QuakeDC?

I have one distro of quake DC. it is gorgoues, hi res, totally smooth, and uses D3D. There is no support for memory cards in this one, not network gaming. This is hardly important as there is no network capability for the DC. Titanium studies made quake for DC, but will not release it. It has VM support so you can save your game.
If anyone wants i will put the running files for quake DC up on my website along with instructions. I wont put up the pak files because its naughty, but you will need pak1.pak and pak0.pak, which are 50 mb and 17 mb respectively.
The dreamcast has network capabilities, and a modem. It wouldn't be to hard to make Quake work online with the Dreamcast. Or something.
