Have you checked for a bios update? I had to reflash my bios when I got my 40 gig drive (athlon slot A) and I think my mobo is probably about the same year as yours. Check it out, that may save you some time and trouble.

As did I. Upgraded to a 60 GB maxtor and my mainboard is probably even more archaic than yours (supported 8 gig max, bought it along with a p2-233 (when they were pretty much the fastest proc around)). So I would be amazed if there isn't a bios update for your system.
