I find it interesting that you assume I do not advocate environmental consciousness. People seem to equate unwillinginess to accept man-made global warming and resistance to environmental reforms. I suppose this makes sense, but the two are not necessarily indicative of each other.
Though I don't buy global warming wholesale, I fully agree with you; there's no reason NOT to pursue alternative energy sources, gas mileage minimums, and stricter all-around environmental regulations for pollution, production, and disposal. In fact, there are many good, non-environmental reasons for decreasing our energy dependence on unstable regions like the Middle East, Venezuela, and Russia.
The point is that you don't have to believe in global warming to advocate respect for the environment. Unfortunately, humankind is remarkably poor at planning for the future, and thus a global warming scare -- legitimate or not -- is probably necessary to spur the populous to action. Sadly, we're unable to prepare for anything unless there's an imminent danger, and sometimes even then we prove incapable of decent planning -- just look at the levees in New Orleans.
The fates lead him who will;
Him who won't, they drag.
