PocketGamer.org - feedback request #2!

Postby Mike Wagstaff » Jun 30, 2001 @ 1:01pm

Hi guys,

It's a quiet Saturday afternoon. You've got nothing better to do, so why not take a quick glance at http://www.pocketgamer.org/test/index.shtml and let me know what you think?

I'd just love to Pocket P-see your opinions... ;)

Basically, is it any better than the current design?

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org

P.S. The bottom bit isn't quite done yet. I'll probably add another box at the bottom for the three button images, along with "Back" and "Top" links.
Last modification: Mike Wagstaff - 06/30/01 at 10:01:32

looks okay but i never take any notice of the design anyway. you've always got new content there every day so i just read it and thats it.

i like the new lines behind the logo and ad, but i didnt think there was anything wrong with the old design.

Pretty nice - but it looks a little empty at the bottom...

Thanks, Paul. I appreciate that it's the content that's important, not the design. :)

The reason behind wanting to change is that the current one can't easily be adapted to display nicely in Pocket Internet Explorer, and is a nightmare when it comes to making site-wide changes.

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org

i'd prefer a pocketpcthoughts design but with the right column added, perhaps a little thinner though.

so basically its a simple white page with the top section you already have, the main area and the column on the right. that would adapt to PIE easily. but you probably want something more colourful and complex than that.

Hi Mike, it looks nice, but I don't think it's as easy going as your current site.

Your current site really makes use of the whole page, and this one kinda falls off underneath that right box/menu.

Have you tried maybe working that blue bg into your current site layout?
I don't like dark colored backgrounds unless there's a specific reason based on necessity. And I think the current design would look much nicer in a PIE.
I like the current design more, it's lighter, easier on the eyes. It frames the important information much better. YES! That's exactly why I like the current design better, the framing.

But for some reason the page always loads twice, could it have to do with the advertisement? Does it rotate banner ads or something?

Every time I resize my IE window with your site it reloads to better take advantage of the window size.

I have looked at your newest design and I think that the sharp corners are a nice break from the whole rounded format. You are still able to convey the important information and I think that the darker background really brings out your news box.

Thanks for all the replies, people! From the looks of it, I'd probably be making a mistake to replace the current layout with this one.

What I might do is fiddle around with the current layout and see if I can make it:

1. Better looking! :)
2. More PIE-friendly.

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org
Hi. I like the new design, but the yellow border seemed to jump out too blaringly. Maybe if you use the same pale yellow from your logo (the "FOR GAMERS ON THE GO" font color), or even the orange .org color, it would help tie things together. The more I look at it the less I notice the bright yellow, and the more I like it, but like the first 5 seconds while it was loading I couldn't keep my eyes off that yellow border. :)

Dan East

Sorry Mike, but I don't like it at all.

Some things you could do to the current site:

You have a yellow bend with a drop shadow. This doesn't match very well with the rest of the interface. How about removing the dropshadow and instead of having a bend just have a 90 degree corner. And if you really need to have a bend try to make it with some antialiasing.

You might also consider ading five pixels above and below the PocketGamer logo...

I like the bend. It relieves you from the rest of the site's hard lines.
