The "safest" way is to reinstall your specific mouse drivers -- if it's Microsoft, get the intellipoint driver, if it's Logitech, get their driver... etc.
Having said that, Windows does seem to be supporting all of the buttons on my Logitech Mx700 using its own drivers. So if it's one of those or similar, and presuming you're using XP...
Open control panel, choose system, go to the hardware tab, and choose "device manager".
In "Mice and other pointing devices" there should be something. In mine it's "HID-compliant mouse". If it isn't that, right click it and choose properties, click "update driver". Then your answers go:
(Connect to update?) "No, not this time"
(Install software) "Install from a list or specific location"
(Choose where) "Don't search. I will choose the driver."
Uncheck the "Show compatible hardware" choose Microsoft on the left and "HID-compliant mouse" on the right. Click "next" and follow it through.
