Black Hawk Down...

Wow this movie looks awesome! NY Times, Newsweek and Rolling Stone all said its the best movie of the year. I can't wait to see it. Although after Jerry Bruckhiemer's Pearl Harbor Im a tad bit weary.

I've learned that what we are meant to do is make love. All those other things; sleeping, eating, going to school, are just to pass time till we make love again.

30 or so American soldiers were flying over a 3rd world country when a renegade army of civilian guerilla's numbering 5000 shot down their Black Hack helicopters. Now, these 30 American soldiers must fight against the odds in one of America's bloodiest, most heartfelt, and most triumphant skirmishes in history...
That's how the commercial goes, something to that effect. At first I though it was 50,000 guerilla's but that sounds like too many.

erm...no...that's not the story.

The U.S. entered Somalia in a "peace-keeping" effort at the end of G. Bush's term. The Clinton administration eager for an early victory then set off the events, after cutting funding. (Thats the political side).

The military side is this. A Special Ops team was sent into Mogadishu to retrieve a drug lord. 4 Black Hawks carried in an assortment of SF, Rangers and Delta guys. Whilest the Black Hawks were poopin around waiting for the dudes on the ground to clean up, a Somali with a Russia RPG shot one down. At this point the entire town lit up with the fury of the Somalis. Vastly outnumbers the Spec Ops dudes dumped the primary plan to save the downed helicopter. Another was shot down and all hell broke loose. The story covers the 36 or so hours of hell these guys went through. It happened in the early 90's.

As things go, it was certainly no victory. But, it was not a total failure either. The kill ratio is on the order of 200 to 1 in favor of the U.S. team.

True story. Very sad.

Oh, that story. I know about it. Every site about snipers carries it. Most of the kills were made by two snipers. Both died and there bodies were brutally mutilated. Some days later they were dumped in front of the US Embassy.
Good timing for the movie to come out now.

wow. I just saw the movie (as it came out in NYC early). Truly an amazing film that again if you didnt have respect for what the men of the military go through sometimes, you will now.(Just like after watching Saving Pvt Ryan) Very depressing however. The scene with the two snipers you talking about is nuts. Literally these two snipers fired at about 500 men coming straight at them down the street. They must of taken out about 50 before the men finally stormed them and brutally mutilated them. It was insane. The whole reason the two snipers even did it was because when the second helicopter went down, there was no one to protect cause all the other troops were still fighting a losing battle at the first downed helicopter. These two snipers were flying overhead and new they had to try and protect there downed pilots till help got there, even though they were fully aware that 500 armed somalis were already en route to the crash site. So basically it was suicide. I cant imagine how they felt as they literally watched a crowd of 500 men charge at them, meanwhile they are only armed with sniper rifles picking them off one at a time until the crowd totally advanced on them and killed them. This was by far the most gripping and brutal scene in the movie as well as the most depressing, although overall it was a very depressing movie anyway.

Woohoo, the like fourth movie in three weeks to be released about war. *cough* pro-war propaganda *cough*. Now i know the movie was in production before the attack of Sept. 11. But i guarantee they rushed post-productions to get it out the door while big american spirit is still fresh in the air. I grow tired of these movies and would like to see a movie about dirt. Yep, dirt, completely non-confrontational dirt. Its just there and when you roll in it you get dirty. Dirt: They real story
