Of course, then, there are my 2 cents...
First off, this idea that developers are on the side of the hackers is complete bullshit. Yeah, maybe a few of the more wacky game programmers are, but very few in comparrison to those against the idea. And, yeah, I did game development in the early-mid 90s, and I hung out pleanty w/ today's big dogs at the GDC when it was the CGDC and it wasn't the whore-house for gamers it is today.
Secondly, don't bring friggin' DRM into this. DRM and most of the audio/video protection out there is complete bullshit. Not because it stop pirates, but because it stops fair use, and THAT is a completely different issue. I say, you want to bring people who download and serve up tons of music for free, go for it...so long as I can rip every CD I own to high-quality MP3 and put it on my PPC.
Piracy, you see, is ILLEGAL and is THEFT. Theft always seems legitimate to the amoral and ignorant, until it is against them. You do realize that people WORK on the code, and then SELL it so they can pay the bills...right?
I put pirates in the same category as adware writers...
