DHCP: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, takes care of the assignment of IP addresses, mostly used by ISPs and larger companies

PPPoE: *shivers* can be used to make a dial-up connection over ethernet, I currently have to use it with my Uni. account and it's very buggy. But that doesn't mean it's a bad protocol, it's just that the IT department over here sucks ;)

Moose: what does you cable internet provider use for end user authentication?

Normally they use your MAC address along with a database entry of all possible mac address for your account. In the DSL/Cable routers there is a MAC clone tab or field that will do like a MAC spoof of your regged MAC address for the provider.

As for the diffrence of PPPoE and DHCP it is 2 totally diffrent things. DHCP is a dynamic was or taking and giving out addresses from a specified IP Address pool by using leases. PPPoE (RFC1483) is a Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet which is a way to authenticate a user to the provider and to give them there rights and also give out addresses. I look at it like a 3rd party DUN (Dial Up Networking) that MS has already built in. I have only known DSL providers to use this along side PPPoA which is a shitty protocol IMO. They use a RFC driver (not sure which) and MS DUN connection to do a connection which is very flakey for anything other than internet stuff.

I have no idea what Comcast, my cable internet provider, uses for anything. That's why I'm asking all this stuff. I want to know if they use PPPoE or not, what settings would be best, how to increase wireless performance, anything that will help my network and broadband connection.

If anyone can find information on Comcast's highspeed cable internet service then please tell me. It's really annoying, they don't have any technical information anywhere.

Comcast in Atlanta uses MAC for there authentication.
find out what the MAC address is for your main PC that was connected to the Cable modem and put that in the MAC clone tab that is in the webpage config screen.

To boost performance you can get some high gain attn. But if you are able to go to all the places you wanted to, to begin with than why try anything else.

How do I determine my MAC authentication number?

And it drops to about 33% or less in some critical areas, like the family room. I'd like to boost the signal if possible, or perhaps I can find a better location for the unit.
Can you go more indepth about this "high gain attn." Where can I find one?

High gain Attns are available off the internet. I just did a search for a few. Linksys has the same sype of attn connections as the Cisco. When I get home this evening I will look for the urls and post them here.

As for the MAC address if you are running
Win98, Win2k, or WinXP. you can go to a dos prompt and do a "ipconfig /all |more" and look for the one that resembles your ethernet card.
something liek this

when you do look for this.
Here is an example " Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-08-02-1E-42-61"

Type in your MAC address under the MAC clone tab. You can also call comcast and ask about this also to verify that you are entering the correct MAC address.
Comcast in Florida may also do open authentication also. You can call them and ask. Open authentication is where the cable modem itself does all the authentication and it does not care what computer you have connected to it. I find that very unsecure and very dangerous for obvious reasons. What I have done when I live on the first floor of my apt building was put the Wireless AP up high like on my entertainment center or on a self I have mounted high on the wall. I know live on the 2nd floor so I keep it on my server which is low to the floor. Let me know if that has helped you any. You can also make your own High gani attns. I believe using parts from Radio Shack again I will search for those URLs when I am home this evening.
