Plastic, perfumes, and polyester? Is oil actually an ingredient in those, or is it just used to power the machinery that creates them?
It's common sense: oil = power.
Saying 'we need to move to fuel cells now' is stupid; they're not a viable option nationwide yet.
That being said, we need to start taking steps towards that end immediately. My worry is growing about Bush's desire to do that. While I approve of drilling in Alaska as a short-term goal, I don't see nearly enough being done in the way of research, pollution limitation laws, etc. etc. If our economy takes a minor hit, so be it. We need to finally start doing something about this situation.
People frequently counter that argument with "well we'll be left behind when the rest of the world still runs on oil for cheaper." I have two responses: (1) if America switches over to alternative power sources, other nations are far more likely to follow and (2) a similar situation already happened with workers' rights and the limited pollution regulations we have, and we survived that. Rather than being left in the dust, we let all the cheap manufacturing jobs move to China and we moved on to bigger and better things.

Him who won't, they drag.
