There is a saying that I always remember, someone told be once, very smart man:
dont read into somthing whats not there, i.e it takes more to read into genisis "long periods of time" than to take it as it says "day", If you believe that the bible is "the word of God", then I think God would have explained it a bit better if he didnt mean a day. BTW moose you are correct in the 5 meanings, but in the "context" of the passage it can only mean a "day" 24 hour period". when reading the bible context is "ALWAYS" the key.
If theres one thing I hate it's a person taking one verse, and saying there we go, this means this!, the verses were placed there by man, as an aid, the context of the book, and passage are key as well...
-Just thought I say that for no particular reason. as I'm sure there almost a verse in the bible to support just about anything! -thats not directed at you either moose!
for example in genisis it explains a "whole" heap on creation, not only the first 6 days (God rested on the 7'th), but also, Adam naming the animals, God creating woman, some time after creating man. i.e to have a "gap" theory in gensis involving some kind of evolution means you virtually throw the whole book out!, then as I said earlier other significant events make no sense!
