doom 3

Postby Brig » Aug 16, 2004 @ 10:35pm

Doom 3 isn't as good as I thought it would be. The scares were cool at the beginning, but soon get old. The game could have been much better if iD had simply hired more people to work on the game. Looking in the manual, the credit seems pretty sparse for such a blockbuster of a game. This was supposed to be an event. It's not.

Interesting how D3 shares the same reaction with other id games, an initial rush of people loving it (me included still) and eventually a large crowd comes out and says it sucks. Their single player games have always been split 50-50 by people who love and hate it.

The shotgun is an iffy addition to the list. It is a difficult weapon to use with internet/graphical lag.

Really, the only weapons I'd want are the RL and the chaingun. And they're the most sparse guns on all the maps. Usually there's one of each. Two viable guns on the whole map is not a good thing, in my book.

D3 really needs a mod to make DM worthwhile. Maybe a D3-Ultra, or something. More viable weapons, slimmer/more open maps, etc.

Without a doubt we'll see some tourney mods for D3, stuff like CPMA.

My view on Doom3's future has gone through about 10 different revisions the last week, so I don't know what the hell to think right now.

I don't think Doom3 is going to have much of a future (unless HL2 really, really blows). The doom3 engine will, but probably in a year or two under a different game (Quake4).

D3 is a bit too graphically intensive for MP gaming right now, and that's really where a game's longevity comes from.

Considering Doom3 is 19th on GameSpy's list: www.gamespy.com/stats I don't see it taking off publicly. Leagues though are flocking too it.

HL2's only multiplayer will be CS Source, so you know thats going to succeed. I actually played the beta, and enjoyed myself quite a bit - but seeing as it was a leaked beta, you wouldn't get all the 11 year old script kiddies, and would play with someone I know most of the time (the 1 reason/1 condition that I'd play CS)

I played cs:s at a local cyber cafe today and its pretty much cs with things that you can move around like tires and barrels. It was pretty fun only because I had 3 other friends playing with me so we could see where the cts were if one of us was killed :P
