Here is one that kind of bothers me. All these equal 1:

5/5
3/3
8/8

but what about:

0/0

I realize that anything divided by zero is undefined- but can zero be divided by itself to equal 1?

No, it doesn't.

a/b=c
a=b*c

0/0=c
0=0*c
c=anything, because multiplying anything by 0 makes it zero. So 0/0 is anything, or infinite.

Shut the hell up Moose. All you did was re-iterate what Digby has been trying to drive into your skull this whole time.

Except this time you ended up with ALL numbers satisfying the equation instead of NONE.

This inconsistency is what makes it undefined. Any number divided by itself should equal one- but obviously a denominator of zero screws up too many things. Including this.

So no it doesn't equal infinity nor does it equal 1. It is still undefined.

okay... let me apologize before anyone else responds.

Sorry Moose. If Digby had given the exact same explanation, I wouldn't have jumped all over him like that.

I still think it is undefined, but it was more of a curiosity question than anything else. So I wasn't expecting any real answers anyway.

But it could be any number, or no number at all. We are ALL making the same point, so it doesn't matter. (and that one is just a place holder for any number).

Perhaps the reason why you can't divide a number by zero is because zero is similar to infinity in that it's a concept rather than an actual number.

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org

And I keep telling everyone that we're arguing the same point to each other. But for some reason you seem to think it's a necessity to tell me to shut up and that your views are right, even though they're the same as mine. ARGH, can we quit this now.
