I said the AC usage jacks up the power consupmtion, not that they're scarce in the south.
I'm not defining southern as only states in the confederacy, but I'd definatly say that states that were in the confederacy are southern. Except maybe Virginia -- I know they like to talk about their southern values and shit, but that's a stretch. Still, your list contained a lot more than "at most 5" southern states -- there were 5 core confederate states alone in it, plus Kentucky, Nevada, and Oklahoma.
Monster.com isn't a perfect or definitive source, but it's not entirely useless either. When a city the size of Mobile only has a handful of positions advertising on the biggest job site on the web, it says something about the area.
Florida and central Texas are anomalies of the south.
Florida has it's huge tourist attractions and whatnot. (Consequently?)It has many cities on par with anything in the north.
I'm not exactly sure why some areas of Texas are flourishing so much in the tech sector -- it could be political, societal, or maybe just random. It's hard to say. That's just kind of the nature of the tech sector, there were (and to some extent, still are) lots of untapped emerging markets in the tech sector with virtually zero entry barriers, low startup costs, and large returns.
Out of curiosity, I wonder what % of Florida millionaires, or their immediate ascendents, hail from and/or still live up north. If I had to guess, I'd say Florida's success has more to do with the Northern influx of money than anything internal.
