I actually find it pretty surprising that the 1:30 meat:grain ratio is even that high! I thought it was more like 1:50 or 1:70.
Well, HowlingBears, I am pretty sure that a very large percentage of the waste from at least American cattle goes to crop fertilization purposes. In fact, my family just put more top-soil on our garden and guess what our soil was. It was processed manure! I am pretty sure that you have already thought about this, but I just wanted to bring it up.
I am reading an add right now, here at PocketMatrix.com, that says the following:
"America
Home of 116 Brands of Cereal.
And 12 million children who are fighting hunger."
Now, I don't mean to belittle the fact, but I am usually one of those 12 Million children since I am usually hungry, being a teen-age male!
BTW, I am a Christian, and it is stated in the Bible (Genesis) that us as humans are stewards of the earth, or masters. That means that we need to take care of it, since the earth is a gift. But it says that we should "fill the earth and subdue it" which I take to mean that we should diversify our cultures and even encourage world-wide population growth (there is still plenty of unused land, especially in places like Canada and Alaska) and take advantage of all the resources available to us on the earth. Now, personally I think that all of this zero-population-growth stuff is a bunch of crap. If we ever do run out of room, we might as well live on Mars or someplace like that. I mean, why not? Because NASA isn't getting any attention? The colonization of space is the ultimate stated goal of the Soviet/Russian space program and also goal of NASA. OK... I am getting a little bit off topic, here, along with everybody else.
I do think that eating meat is probably not very efficient and is very often times quite unhealthy. I still like it, though!
