Ahh, I've been away for a few days and I come and see the a zillion posts on! I won't even attempt to try to answer all of the issues raised here (sorry Warren).
I'll just try to get one point across (addressing this post to RIcoder)
As you may or may not realize, one of the main reasons Israel is getting so much sh*t out of the countries around it is becaues they are the easiest and closest front the Muslims have against the west (btw, any other Arab border with the rest of the world also seems to be in constant wars, the notable exception being Turkey). Israel is a weaker target than Europe and the US, and (thanks to people with similar opinions to you) one that's easier to attack with little international consequences. (When the US attacks Afganistan, it gets the support of the rest of the world including Afganistan's closest allies. When Israel attacks those that attack it, the world condemns them as 'not wishing peace and contributing to the cycle of violence')
This is one of the main reasons why the Muslim hatred had been focused on it for so long and a main reason for the ongoing struggle in the ME. Israel is attacked as a representative of the US as much (if not more) the other way around. Look at the Gulf War (Israel was attacked by missles it did not participate in the war, and avoided counter-attacks only because of US requests). Just look at Iran that while it currently only supports attacks against Israel, in their rethorics they call Israel 'the small devil' while the US is 'the big devil'.
You talk about American interests... well, I hope that by now you know that most likely if WW-III takes place in the next few decades, it'd be between the Islamic world and the Western world. In this war Israel is currently one of the first fronts, paying for it with the blood of it's people.
Ignore that, and you give up on one front of the war and encourage terrorism and terrorist countries and organizations. Encourage terrorist countries and organizations, they grow stronger. And when they grow stronger and get better weapons and better training, care to guess where they're going to point it at?
One quick example... When Israel destroyed the Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1982 it recieved world-wide condemnation, about a decade later - the Gulf War, a war of American interest, by your definitions, took place. Had Iraq been able to get simple nuclear weaponary by that time had their reactor not been destroyed? If not, would they have wated with the invasion to Kuwait until they do? I don't know. But aren't you glad we didn't have the chance to find out?
I don't want the world, I just want your half.
