Posted: Aug 2, 2004 @ 4:10pmThe Pentium M is one hell of a chip. It's based on the P3 Core, which, clock for clock, blows the P4 out of the water.
I read an article a while ago in a magazine (CustomPC) which pitted a 1.26 'Tualatin' Overclocked to 1.8Ghz, (The fastest they could go without more core voltage and PCI/AGP Lock) against a P4 Celeron overclocked to 3.22Ghz. In most benchmarks (both synthetic and application based), the P3 won (By around 5-15%).
The Pentium M also has a 1M L2 Cache.
But having said that, the A64M looks pretty good too.

There's nothing really wrong with it except for the fact that it feels like it's falling apart all the time, but that's pretty much expected unless you go for a premium brand. If you can score an IBM T-series for $1200 get that; otherwise, get an x1000. Very nice value for the money. Mine cost me ~$1250 back in March and it has these specs:
1.4ghz centrino
256mb RAM (got another 256mb later for $30)
64mb Radeon 9200 (remember to get the 64mb, it's a lot faster compared to the 32mb than you might think)
40gb hard drive
DVD/CDRW
Integrated wifi
Very sweet 1280x800 screen
...and this was four and a half months ago.
As for the battery, I've played a 3-hour DVD on one charge before.

I wouldn't get a x1000 because when I configered it to be at least OK for gaming it ran out to be $1600. And thats with an utterly slow HD. I recomend the M series notebook at PROPortable if your going to increase your budget a little. It has a Pentium M and you can even get a faster HD, better video card and the like.
