G isn't any faster except within like 20 feet. G just provides more speed levels within the same range.
N is coming out soon, it'll be good. It's a range increase and over 100mbps.

That seems like normal behavior. I notice that my internet is slower when on WiFi, too.

Yeah, turning off security will really help.

I live in the sticks, so security is never turned on. Also, I can never think of a 13 digit password. :P

You could always build a waveguide antenna if your wifi card allows an externam antenna...

Not sure if a large metal plate would work, to be honest. All I've tried is a replacement 6db gain antenna, which cost ~10 euros and increased signal strength from ~80% to 100%.

That didn't actually solve my problem, but then that's another story (which is going to involve both a PCI card and a wireless ethernet bridge being shipped back to DLink for the second time because it's the worst hardware I've ever owned).

You will NEVER get a full 11mbit on 802.11b, even if the antennae are humping each other. You should be able to hit 2mbit easily though, I very often max out my 3mbit download speed no matter where I have a signal.

Then again, I also turned up my router's transmitter from 28mW to 251mW. That might be why. GO LINUX!

Don't worry, you should find the pain from your groin fades over time.
