I knew someone would bring that up. The electromagnets can be anywhere in the pipe, not near any components. And plus, the metal yoke around the electromagnets direct the magnetic flow, so there is no field outside of the yoke.

I agree, though. The toroid might be a better solution. I'm trying to think of a downside to a toroid ...

Another funny thing I notice is that they have the kinomagnetic force being exerted 45 degrees off axis. I wonder why they did that. To create turbulence I suppose so more of the liquid metal gets air time.

I can think of a downside. You can't get any propulsive force from it.

The fact the magnet is at an angle makes no difference, the field occurs between the two poles of the magnet, the orientation of the rest of the magnet is irrelevant, as it doesnt effect the direction of the magnetic field. I guess they put it at an angle just so that is doesn't stick out so much.
