How do I do that? And will that preserve the function of the buttons on the side of the mouse (forward and backward)?

The "safest" way is to reinstall your specific mouse drivers -- if it's Microsoft, get the intellipoint driver, if it's Logitech, get their driver... etc.

Having said that, Windows does seem to be supporting all of the buttons on my Logitech Mx700 using its own drivers. So if it's one of those or similar, and presuming you're using XP...

Open control panel, choose system, go to the hardware tab, and choose "device manager".

In "Mice and other pointing devices" there should be something. In mine it's "HID-compliant mouse". If it isn't that, right click it and choose properties, click "update driver". Then your answers go:
(Connect to update?) "No, not this time"
(Install software) "Install from a list or specific location"
(Choose where) "Don't search. I will choose the driver."
Uncheck the "Show compatible hardware" choose Microsoft on the left and "HID-compliant mouse" on the right. Click "next" and follow it through.

Ever since I got my first T20, I've been addicted to that little red dot in the center of the IBM laptops. Now all I buy is IBMs, firstly cause of the quality, and secondly because I can't stand touchpads.

tracksticks... *ewww*

My dad just changed jobs, and now he's getting an IBM laptop. Not sure which one it is though. I'd better be a good one, as it has to replace his previous job's laptop (Dell). Sure lots of peeps complain about Dell, but damn, that device was like an animal! You couldd throw anything at it and it'll run it smoothly....and widescreen ;).
