New Computer! (maybe...)

Hey everyone, I
may be getting a new computer soon. What I want is an Alienware 1.8Ghz with G-Force 3, 75Gb, 22" flat screen moniter, SoundBlaster! 5.1X, and WindowsME. It also has 56x CD drive, 16x DVD-ROM, cool case and keyboard color, all for $3,675.00. Not that bad, especially for an Alienware.

Or you could build the same computer for half the price.

Hey, sounds pretty good - but who the hell uses CD-ROM drives?!? In fact you don't see any difference between 24 and 50x speed! Try to get a DVD/CD-R(W)-writer instead!

I could get DVD/CD-ROM drive for it (it's an opinion from Alienware). I'd MUCH rather buy a manufactured computer than custom built, because Alienware has the best service. Say I get the 1.8Ghz (I can choose between Pentium and AMD, I like AMD better) and in a while, a 3Ghz processor comes out, then I can call up Alienware and buy the part from them (they charge the manufacturer's suggested price, cheaper than stores) and they'll come to my house and install the part for FREE! Alienware computers are designed to be upgraded at a regular basis, because the last thing Alienware wants is to have a computer that's "out of date". Plus I like the green color

And I don't trust myself to make a whole computer

get them to install all your games, they'll tweak them free of charge

No motherboard is currently rated to work higher than 1.8GHZ, or with a multiplier higher than 14. Sorry Warren, upgrading to anything higher than a 1.846GHz processor is out of the question, unless you want a whole new MoBo, which means basically a new computer.

This is why manufacturers SUCK ASS. They offer upgrades that aren't feasible. And when I can buy those exact same components without an ugly ass color case for near half the price. Of course, to build it yourself you have to be smart. So that's out of the question~

I could build my own computer, I helped a friend build his (you should see the case, it's held together with ducked tape), but I'm just too lazy. If I want to upgrade the motherboard, I buy one and put it in. Have you seen how huge the Alienware case is? Taller than a 22" moniter! That's almost the size of my 1989 IBM (and that thing is HUGE!). Upgrading is not a problem, plus, I use my computer for gaming, the graphics card is what makes the game go. If you have a 366Mhz computer with a Voodoo3 and a 500Mhz with Voodoo3, the difference would be small. The better the graphics card, the better the game plays. The advantage of having a faster CPU is loading times. That's why we need a graphics card for our PPCs! I'm not the type of gamer that considers playing Quake III at 60fps as unplayable, but as long as it run smoothly and nicely, I play it! The G-Force 3 is the big new thing, and will probably stay that way for about a year, mainly because 3DFX is out of business, and there's little competition. In the software world, it's the Quake III engine that's big. It'll be an entire year until the Doom III engine debuts. Moose Master, I'm gonna get the Alienware computer and you can't stop me (except my dad, who'll probably say no, that's why I have the "maybe..." up there).

Um, that is just a huge funcking waste of money. Indeed, you could build the same thing for half the price. If you like green, then paint the damn case. Candy Apple green if you want.

And how difficult is it to "upgrade" nowdays? It takes all of 30 seconds to install a new processor.

that gfx card is the best gfx card u can buy (geforce 3) moose it is not processor dependent.

I never said anything about the Geforce 3 or any graphics card being processor depended. What i did say is that the Voodoo series of graphics cards is severely hit by the bus speed (and therefore processor speed) of the computer.

ARGH!! Just reading my post again Chuck, you missed a lot.

Well, first of all. Whatever.. I don't care.
And I don't want to argue with you, but the Voodoo5 or 3 or whatever you mentioned is heavily affected by the CPU. The BUS speed on the slower processor would crush the FPS count substantially.

The 6 month product cycle of NVIDIA is almost up, so the Geforce3 Ultra, MX, and Pro will be released within 2 months, upping the performance by nearly 50%.

But whatever. You can never have the most advanced computer if you're always waiting for the next big thing to come out. But $3,000 is definitely rediculous for that computer.

And why would you want a flat screen monitor? Those are terrible for all types of multimedia. The liquid crystal inside the display cannot chemically update the display fast enough to compensate for any kind of quick motion. You'll just have to tell your friends that you've got the only Geforce3 card with hardware motion blur always enabled =P
He did talk about a the Voodoo series of graphics cards, and that for games the processor doesn't matter which was incorrect. I corrected him.

Try reading posts before you reply like an ignorant ass.

And chuck, like I said to Paul, calm down the language. I'm not going to put up with pubescent vulgarity.

Moose, im not sure about editing post with swearing. I think we are all mature enough to handle some cussing. In my opinion i really dont care at all, but since this board isnt just for me i try to stick with what the majority wants, and I havent read to many post complaining about swearing lately. If people do think its a problem, then speak up. If not, well have fun.
