Roommates suck

Okay, Matt had his turn with DSL, now it's my turn to rant. I got back on campus yesterday, had to run around working (I'm at the college computer store, which means I'm installing computers for freshmen), getting set for Forensics (auditions were hectic), and trying to finish my own work (still have the texture-mapped zoom algorithm for GNUBoy to work on, and my script still needs finishing). I go to move into my room, take the first bed since I get in first, get all my stuff unpacked (I brought something like 1 box of of clothes and books, very frugal), and then I leave to go run errands. I get back, and both of my roommates have been smoking in my room. Not just smoking, but smoking furiously. Each of these guys literally has a pack and a half a day habit, and they refuse to go outside.

Now, I don't smoke, but I can respect those who do. I'll put up with it in short doses, I try not to whine, and it's their problem. It gives me a headache though, and I hate the smell. I ask these jackasses if they wouldn't mind going out onto the balcony or the stairs 10 feet away when they need to smoke, because I don't want my bed and my clothes smelling awful and my laptop all clogged up. Their response? Basically something like "f#ck you. There are two of us and one of you, so majority rules." I wasn't aware that my health was a goddam democracy.

People wanna smoke, that's their problem. But don't force me to. Don't make me come home and sleep in a bed covered with nicotine and ashes from your bad habit. Don't quadruple my risk of emphysema or lung cancer with my bad family history just because you can't kick the habit. That's serious disrespect. Even worse, the RA won't do anything about it for a couple days, and I can't move out until the 16th. Of September. By which time with these morons' massive addiction I'm going to be a walking advertisement for Philip-Morris.

This is pathetic. I understand that the university is low on rooms, but I didn't choose to be in this area. I didn't choose this room (it was the last one available), I didn't pick these roommates, and if nothing changes I'm paying $1350 a year to inhale secondhand smoke constantly. It's criminal, and it's got me seriously pissed off.

My sister just went off to collage, she simply requested a room with someone who doesnt smoke or drink, poof, she got a room with a non-smoking and non-drinking person. I suppose things are different at your school. Of course she isnt quite staying in a dorm room, she has a two person suite.

Also, if you would like to compare your ranting to mine, you must go on for another 4-5 paragraphs;)

That should be illegal. Go talk to someone of authority, and tell them you aren't taking that shit. If they refuse to take action NOW, go somewhere else. Go as high up the ladder as you have to.

Nobody should tolerate that kind of shit. Especially until the middle of next month.

Ideot, your juvenile opinions are worthless. Violence solves nothing.

Thomas. Go to the highest ranking person you can find and get them kicked out or have you moved. If they won't then take all your stuff to a friends room. Talking to these monkeys won't do anything. Or better yet ;D, buy one of those air purifier things that makes huge amounts of noise and leave it on all night long so you can sleep without breathing smoke. If they trash it then you can have them ... arrested/kicked out/ something. If they complain about it then they know how you feel about their smoking. And don't stop it until they quit smoking or move. (Those air purifiers really help, I just got one in my house. I can breathe easier, it's not humid, and my room is cooler. The air is nice and crisp)

Thomas, can't you just do as Matt's sister did? Ask for non-smoking roomies? I think if you make enough noise (to the right people, of course) you will get somewhere. And I have a saying: "if you want to complain, talk to the owner". I mean, go as high as you can with the complaint. Usually it works better and faster then talking with the guy responsible for that kind of problem.

Yep. And also revel in the fact that their teeth will stain and they will prolly develop some periodontal disease or ANUG and lose out on any kind of social life with the opposite sex they could ever have had.
Actually, it's cool now. They moved me downstairs. I'm not sure if it was my pestering the housing department or if my parents made a call and forced them into it, but it's much better now. The old roommates can get cancer and die, and I'll never have to worry about it.

Damn, that's cold.

I smoke cigars, not cigarettes and I can tell you what those two idiots were doing is just stupid and not inclusive of all smokers. There is a difference between enjoying a smoke and being an asshole by smoking up a room you clearly have no right to. If I were you I would just started up an even worse habit such as farting all the time as much and as frequent as you could or use something really toxic and vile smelling in the room like foam latex rubber and tell them you have to use it for you "movie special FX" class.

I'm not a frequent smoker, and even I know that is plain rude. If I feel I need a smoke, I always take it outside. What there doig is just plain stupid

Yeah, but that's what the steps outside the dorm are for, man. People always out there making conversation, smoking, fucking around. I was under the impression that was the whole point of being a smoker.
