I've spent the entire afternoon researching GPS and Radar Detectors for my car. I was wondering if anyone else was interested in this stuff? If so, please post any information you have here. I find all of it very cool. Here's some of what I have so far.

Pioneer's solution () is very interesting. The single DIN DVD Navigation system ($2400) can be used on it's own with voice commands an recognition or accompanied by a 7" motorized retracting widescreen ($1000) to display the current route in three views (). An overhead, classic map style; a 3 dimensional "driver's view;" and a split screen mode with plenty of options. A CUE receiver () can also be added seperately as a means to advise you of traffic jams and reroute your course appropriately or to act as a concierge service to make reservations, send flowers, or check the latest movie listings. The DVD Navigation unit is all voice recognition. If you want a different route just say "reroute course." If you don't like travelling on freeways, just tell the unit that by saying "exclude freeways." Perhaps you want to find the "Fastest route," or the "shortest route." And when you're on an interstate with an exit coming up the GPS unit will switch to a 3Dimension view showing the design of the exit ramp and routing you appropriately. Great for the Florida Turnpike . The Unit is even trained to your vocal inflections so it can recognize YOU above your Mudyvane music blairing in the foreground.

Alpine's Navigation system is yet another interesting unit () but I find Pioneer's modular design and upgradeability very useful.

If you're interested in radar detection but hate those cheap Radio Shack brand, try the custom installed, custom fitted K40 Electronic's "Undetectable" unit (). If you're worried about laser's detecting your speed, just buy the coveted "Laser DifuserPlus" (same page).

I can't wait until I get some extra money. My car is going to be full of this kind of stuff! Forget lasering my eyes. I'm getting GPS, radar detectors, proximity sensors, night vision windshield displays... then I won't have to see at all!

Does anyone have any more information on any kind of car modifying. Chips, supercoolers ... wheels, body kits ... XM Radios, GPS Nav ... Radar detectors ... anything "aftermarket" regarding cars. I don't car if it's just a great paint job. I want this thread to be full of car info.

What car have you got? theres bound to be a modding site for it out there whatever it is.... You can get some extra power pretty cheaply if thats what your after, go down the usual route, heres a list cos im bored

1. Buy an aftermarket induction kit (k&n 57i etc)- 3-4 bhp £50
2. Straight-through s/s exhaust system (As some1 said further up) with de-cat pipe (if youve got a catalytic converter) and a new 4-1 exhaust manifold ~10bhp £250
3. Wilder cam (go for a 285 spec, youll see what i mean when you go lookin) ~10bhp £250
4. Ported and polished head (ask a tuner) upto 10bhp
5. Superchip (~10bhp £300) or if your looking to go further/have more money go for a unichip (15bhp+ more when you get more mods as its re-mappable, made by dastek, about £5-600)

After this you start getting into big money, turbo conversions (if your motors normaly aspirated) or supercharger conversions, from there you can get a reinforced alloy intercooler and an uprated head gasket and start turning the boost up a bit.... basic turbo conversion should give you about 50bhp tho, which is nice, and you can get a dump valve for the PSSSST noise when you change gear
Basic s/c conversion cost about £2500 fitted in the uk.

Get some Stiffer suspension as well, koni adjustables are what i use, and slam it as well, i would drop it at least 50mm all round depending on what size rims you want to run (big wheels = slow acceleration btw!), will make it handle like a new car

As for body kits my advice is to stay subtle, im not a fan of the fast n the furious style graphics or super wide arch kits. Tint the windows, get some nice looking wheels with some low profile rubber, de-locking and smoothing looks nice looks nice. Just look around im sure you'll find a kit you like, it is after all down to personal taste which is the whole point of moding your car in the first place! individuality

Theres a site somwhere on the web where an english guy has instructions on how to make a nitro kit for about 60 quid. its for a bike, but could be easily adapted for cars. Only needs some pipes, a little re-jetting, and a colder burning plug.
I'm not sure what views are taken on nitro in america.

all of alexms stuff sounds good tho, and those power gains are realistic, though maybe not stacking up like that. certainly 10 bhp from standard. a turbo would be fun for about £2000, its the cheapest way of whacking on 50bhp

what surprise me is that power gains are about the same for bikes and cars, which is probably why insurance companys hate modded bikes.
