New PC - your input

New PC - your input

Postby Dave Johnston » Jun 6, 2002 @ 5:26pm

Ok, I'm getting a new PC, and these are my minimum specs:
- P4 2.0GHz
- GeForce 4
- 512MB RAM

So, I've been playing around with a few possible combinations of components until I've met one that is beneath my £1200 spending limit. I think I've found a decent combination, and just thought I'd let you all look over it - there are no doubt a few people who know more than me about this stuff!

- Abit BD7-II RAID i845EP (533FSB) P4 DDR Mobo (S478) £116.33
- 512Mb PC2100 DDR - ECC Registered (Micron Original)£179.78
- 2.266 GHz *533FSB* Intel Pentium® P4 CPU 0.13u 512k Cache * S478 * £230.89
- 128Mb MSI G4Ti4400-VTD GeForce 4 TV Out/Video In/DVI £217.38
- Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy Player SB1394 OEM £54.64
- 400W PSU with PFC AMD/P4 £37.60
- 80Gb Maxtor D740X ATA-133 (7200rpm, 2MB Cache, 8.5ms) Quiet Drive Technology £103.11
- Lian Li PC68 USB Aluminum Midi Case - Without PSU £129.25

I'd get a PSU separately from QuietPC (spot the focus).

Can anyone spot any potential configuration problems? Last time I built a PC (this one no less) I had no problems, but I spent months researching my choices. I did all the above yesterday afternoon :)

Specifically, is that the right RAM/mobo combination? I really am out of touch!

If you are spending the money to get a pentium 4, go with Rambus ram, nor DDR. If you can't afford rambus, then go the way of athlon. You can get a faster processor, and you will then be able to spend some of that saved money of other things. BTW, what speakers are you getting/do you have, and what model Audigy is that?

rdram is more expensive and the speed difference between rdram and ddr is only marginal. That's why the i845 chipset is becoming more and more popular.
