I was reading about it in PC Gamer and it got me interested in it, although I don't have the budget to pay for another game every month.

If you go and buy a game, get Warcraft III. All said.

I don't like it when you have to pay monthly to play a game... I just don't play enough to to make it worthwhile for me I guess

The only game I pay monthly to play is Shattered Galaxy, $9.95 a month. (http://www.sgalaxy.com) It's like a combination between Diablo and Starcraft. You are a person that walks around this planet, the map resembles Risk in it's territory scheme, and when you enter a hostile area you choose what 6 to 12 units you want to fight with, along with the 20 other allies of yours and 21 enemies, and duke it out. The object of each match is to find and sit on all of the POCs or "Points of Contention" in the map, once all of them have been taken, or the majority of them when time runs out, then you win. If you're defending then you just have to keep that from happening. It's all 2D like Starcraft. But your character can level up and gain attribute points so you can customize your units with better compenents. It's quite fun.
And if someone signs up under my name: MooseMaster and email: moosemaster@mail.com then I get 2 weeks free of charge ;)

Warcraft 3 has elements of Diablo in it (exp, merchants, etc.) It will be awesome. If you like DAoC, try Morrowind. No multiplayer, but very great game nonetheless. Make sure you have a top of the line cpu. It taxes my 1 ghz p3 /w geforce4 easily.
