CPU Upgrade

CPU Upgrade

Postby Dan East » Jul 31, 2002 @ 5:40pm

I need some advice in upgrading my CPU. My desktop machine is a Dell with a PIII @ 500 mhz. I hope some of you experts can advise a simple drop-in CPU upgrade that will at least double my processing power. My main reason to upgrade is because it takes so long to encode movies at high resolution.

Thanks!

You should be able to drop in at least a 1ghz. Pricewatch reports up to a 1.23ghz for $204, 1.2ghz for $120, and 1ghz for $108.
holy internets batman.

Dell... do they even support bios updates? :)

Problem with Dell is they don't provide you with much technical data about your system. I'd lookup what kinda motherboard you have, download the latest bios update for it. In the bios update dox it will also say what the fastest proc is you can fit in your system.

If you are interested in looking at making yourself a computer, there is no better place to go than This is the BEST place to go for computer parts. I made am Atlon 850 Mhz, w/ 128 MB of SDram, S3 Savage 4 AGP(Piece of Sh*t), and a 20 gig HD all for $300. Now I need to go there again to upgrade my RAM. 128 MB isnt enough anymore.

Dan, what you might be able to do is find one of those processor upgrade kits. Let me explain what a mean. Back in the day when 200mhz was the next big thing, they offered a chip that ran on the same bus speed and frequency as a 486 that you could replace your 486 chip with. I remember seeing the same thing for pentium 2 chips (so you could upgrade to 1 ghz). By now, they may have a pentium 3 chip upgrade avalible.
