Radar Detectors

Radar Detectors

Postby James S » Aug 26, 2002 @ 1:31am

Okay guys, are ANY of you interested in radar detectors for cars? I'm looking into getting one, I think I know the one I want, but I just want to run it by anyone that might know anything.

I'm thinking about getting the Uniden LRD987. It's got just about everything I want. All bands, laser, VG-2 undetectable, electronic compass, voice alerts, SWS to detect road hazards and things like that...

I was also looking at the Uniden GPSRD which comes with a built in GPS antenna so it tracks your location, gives you your average speed, top speed, distance to travel, time to destination, but it lacks VG-2 (not that I REALLY need this, unless I'm in Virginia or Canada ). But all that GPS stuff that I'll probably never use but is really cool for $80 more! I don't think that's worth it.

The Cobra ESD9220 WX is on a huge sale right now, it's $30 less than the first one i mentioned. It's got weather alerts, it detects EMS and emergency vehicles so I know if they're coming up so I can get out of the way, voice alert which is the biggest feature I want, but it lacks an electronic compass, which is the second biggest feature I wanted in a radar detector. But it's on a huge sale! But it's kind of ugly, blue buttons, two tone, some little wing off the side.

The Uniden one looks much better, it doesn't look so much like a toy. But the Cobra is on a big sale and has tons of little features... but no compass.

There's a fourth, by Beltronics which is the highest rated detector in distance detected category and percentage of laser detection. But it is expensive, especially when it doesn't have any cool features and looks almost as bad as the Cobra.

So those are my choices. I wanted a battery powered one so I didn't have cords dangling everywhere but those are horrible ... and what I REALLY was one integrated into my car with radar and laser detectors mounted behind my bumpers, but that gets expensive and then I don't have my car for a day and then they have to get inside the dash to string wires into the integrated unit. Plus I can't move the unit out. And those are REALLY expensive and not even that great at detecting radar, plus no voice alert or ANY special features.

So it's basically between the first three
Uniden LRD987 $120 (all the features I'll ever use)
Uniden GPSRD $200 (cool GPS stuff that I'll rarely use, but cool)
Cobra ESD9220 $80 (lots of stuff and a great sale, 50% off)

Does anyone here know anything about radar detectors and could help me make my decision. I'll probably go with the Uniden unless anyone objects.

I was actually looking at getting one myself. I have had way to many close calls, especially on my way to work when im really in a rush. Just on the way home I passed a cop doing ten over, thankfully I didn't get ticketed. Anyways, Staples has the Cobra in stock and they will cut me a deal on it, so I might get that one. But it will be nice to look at what some of these other ones feature.
