What sort of projects could lead to job offers?

What sort of projects could lead to job offers?

Postby wyrd » Jan 8, 2004 @ 11:42pm

Since the PPC market is fairly small (at least that's the impression I've gotten), I was curious as to what sort of projects would lead to job offers? This is, of course, assuming the project was not an utter failure, but rather a success.

Thinking about it, maybe I'm asking too broad of a question. Those of you who have made a project as an independant developer (either commercially or not), were you offered a job by one or more companies? If so, what was the project (a game, software app, etc)?

Thanks in advance.

Dupes? Today is the first I've seen any of them. I had given up on that post last night. Sorry :-)

Something tells me I've missed a lot. :) Did I?

Anyway, you sound like you wanted to create a portfolio that you want others to notice, my only advice is to give your best. If it's a very nice game, I'm sure people will notice it. Then you get a better track record and use it later on when applying to large game dev companies.

I personally have had quite a few offers for contract work and have taken advantage of those projects I felt were interesting. I know several artists that have more offers than they know what to do with.

I can imagine. Good artists are hard to come by (at least in my experience).

I've been asked to submit a resume to a small game company in Ottawa, but I haven't since I'm working on my own games right now.

This was probably more to do with a game company project lead knowing my project lead from the genetic data mining company (we met at his wedding), but I did talk about all the little Pocket PC game stuff I was working on at the time.

If stuff didn't work out for me, I might try a game development job. Or maybe something that involves artificial intelligence or machine learning. First and foremost, I want to work on interesting things. There's a lot of interesting problems out there waiting to be solved.

I'm an artist myself and I was offered 2 times to work abroad for 2 diff. game companies (because of Tower Mogul) but I chose to work full time on the Pocket PC because I wanted to enhance my programming skills aside from being an artist. What I'll be doing next is work on big projects w/ a few people so I can experience how it feels working with a larger team (maybe 3-4 people) on a pocket pc game. However, I couldn't find one yet, but i'm sure I can persuade a few people from PM to start a nice project and work together. :)
