Just a guess: If he's using WEP, when he changed the name of the router what he was actually doing was changed the SSID. Since the new SSID didn't match any profile SSIDs the iPaq didn't know what to use for a WEP key. You can connect but I bet you didn't get an IP. When he changed it back the SSIDs matched again.

what did your friend change?

the host name, the wep key, or the ssid ? it makes a diff...
