In fact during the last election Bush thought that the each states should decide whether or not to allow gay marriage. Cheney was on that side also and even said during an interview that he thought that you should be able to marry anyone you want but it should be up to the states to decide for themselves.

Attempt to ban gay marriage ?

There was never such thing.

Anyway, gay marriage is an oxymoron considering the fact that marriage signifies union between men and a woman.
What gays deserve is a some sort of union which , legally, has the same standing as marriage but it is not defined as such.

Anyway, it is not religious right who tries to redefine or ban anything - it is gays who are trying to redefine century old term to fit their own new definition.

Anyway, I am done responding to your posts Trae.
I am sorry to have to come to this conclusion and I do not write stuff like this lightly, but you are a mindless troll not worth my time and effort.

You don't bring anything of substance to the discussion and mainly concentrate on sniping and personal attacks.

The constitutional ammendment banning gay marriage isn't a real possibility. To imply that Congress made a serious attempt at passing it is misleading. Discussion is not the same as intent.

And Bjorn's statement implying the US' lack of acceptance of homosexuality is exaggerated. Bjorn, I know this is just probably due to lack of information, but in case you are unaware, there are tons of gay pride parades / shows of gay pride throughout the United States. In fact, it's not rare to see a rainbow flag waving next to an American one outside peoples' houses in many areas (the rainbow flag is, of course, the insignia of gay pride).

Finally, marriage is a social institution, not necessarily one of religion. While religion normally intervenes in the matter, it is essentially defined the same way throughout different cultures with very different religions. It's no coincidence that in most cultures, marriage is between one man and one woman, while the morals and/or laws of the societies otherwise differ greatly.
