_windowed_mouse ifdef _WIN32 ?

_windowed_mouse ifdef _WIN32 ?

Postby Moose or Chuck » Apr 1, 2001 @ 2:50pm

I was browsing the source file and found my way to the Menu screen. It says something about a windowed mouse if def _WIN32. I'm assuming that would let you use the mouse to select (or atleast go up and down) options in the menu. Maybe we could implement a touch screen for the menu, doesn't look like it would be hard, but it would take some time. It would be a nice feature...
feedback.

I've got the bad habit of tapping the screen with tbe stylus in the Quake Menus.

Actually implementing tap driven menus would be nice.

Are you sure the mouse proprites in the code aren't just tied into the Windowed Mouse feature?

BTW- Anyone else ever catch themselves using their stylus or finger to tap the OK box on their Monitor?
Yeah, I find myself diong that every time... it's just habit, especially after having tho close the about box (which still says versiobn .04.. anyone else care about that?) I find myself opening the menu and then trying to tap that... and then I fell kinda silly.

You can read any of my reviews if you want.. so far I've only done these: V-rally, Bubbles, Bubblets, PocketPop, The Fly, Ball's Clues, Puzzle, and Resco Blocks... I told you crappy puzzle games (aside from V-rally and The Fly).

Honestly, I'm dissappointed with the crap that keeps being churned out from (mainly) the "bigger" companies, bigger because they charge money for their games, when usually you can find better ones for free, but theyre just hard to find.

So far, the best games that I've honestly played been V-Rally, Metalion, and Turjah, (and PQ bu that's a different genre, porting which I really don't want to get into right now).... and that's sad.

These games are the "top" games for the PPC and they're still very weak. But, they do have all the essential elements of a real game. They have decent graphics (worthy of about 1st generation SNES games, come on the PPC can do MUCH better), pretty nice sound effects (except V-rally, which sucked ass! I can't believe htey even released that game with the sound that it had), and actual MUSIC.. games need to have music, I can't stress that enough, Play control is there on all three (especially on the Casio, which is the only PPC I have) this is the only area where the PPC is actually doing.. okay, and actual gameplay is sometimes fun (because it has to be, we have no other real options except to play puzzle/strategy games... which unless you're me you probably don't enjoy them.. and besides puzzle/strategy genre is even FURTHER behind than the rest.. I don't mind 15 billion clones of Numberoos, as long as theyre done well, with nice little technical advancements (( look at Tetris DX for the GB color, it has cool stuff rotating in the background and sound pretty kickin' cheesy tunes to jam to!))) where was I? I forget, the point is, someone beside Jimmy and Zio need to PUSH the envelope in gaming, not just churn out 1st generation SNES games for the PPC in disguise, I want to see PS1 games (atleast first generation) for hte PPC, it can be possible, if we can run Doom, we can easily run Ridge RAcer, Street Fighter Alpha +EX 2 -Turbo plus Championship, Rayman, Final Fantasy XVI, and many others. And I'm sorry if I'm bringing up console games, but this is the only thing I can really compare the PPC to right now, it's just not giong to be playing games htat are on the current Desktop PC, obviously..... okay, I think I'm done

Wow. So I guess I'm not the only one disappointed in the BIG companies. I think the PPC is capable of so much more, too. But like any new gadget, it takes time to push the envelope. I think the time has come and so far the only people I see doing anything about it are independents like Dan.

Thanks for the input.

Not really, it's just a port of the Gameboy Color version. It's all sprite based and definitely Not the PS1 version.

It's being made by a cheap third party company and it looks terrible, none of the real effects that were in the original Rayman, with low color count. We need games like Street Fighter, Virtual Fighter (extremely easy to do), Marvel vs. Capcom (I like fighters), Final Fantasy 7, Silpheed (remeber that amazing Saturn game), and many others. Every one of those is very possible, and would be faster than the original games. It's not hard to program for a pocket PC, only as hard as it is for Windows. The programmer just needs to know the pros and cons of the processors and devices. I've got a 1 GB MD, who cares if I need it to all to play Virtual Fighter (one), I'd do it any day for a good game.
But this thread went off topic in 2 posts, new record! Yahhh!!!

Actually, it's more like three but whatever. No, the Rayman game isn't all that bad, in fact it was a nice, enoyable, 2-d platformer for th GB Pocket and it would be the best platformer to date on the PPC if it came out tommorrow, the point is, it's not coming out tommorrow. They're actually taking time to port it from the GB Platform (why? I think it would actually be easier (possibly faster) to port the win32 (3d) version since it (and their source code) already exists)and htis is just sad when we have two running 3d engines running on the PPC (Chopper alley and the Jacco Bikker one). Not to say that 2d is bad. But if you're going to do 2d, do something more like Megaman X4, or Castlevania Symphony of the Night, or even Tomba, just not a GB port.

Yeah, PocketPC is capable of so much more.

I mean the color depth is amazing on PPC, especially compared to GB and Palm. I even have an old 486 laptop with a passive matrix screen (color)that doesn't display colors as well as PPC.

So there isn't any excuse for games being restricted to 8-bit color. Even if they are a PocketCrossword or Tetris clone.

It's no irony that the best games on the PocketPC are emulated ones.

These PocketPC Game design teams are 98% programming freaks with the remaining 2% comprising game designers and graphic artists.

While I am enjoying the new age in PPC graphics with Turjah II and Metalion, all that doesn't amount to squat in the eyes of gameplay. Truth be known, I'd much rather play a game of Gradius or Contra over those two games any day.

Regarding Fighting games, 2 words, Yeah Right. SNK vs Capcom is Barely worth playing with only 2 buttons, and that's on a machine dedicated to pocket gaming.

Forget buying these PPC aimed games, my money is on emulation ;)
Yeah, I agree... speaking of which, whatever happened to Snesce/twsfc.. .that was super fast, and it's a shame Sukon stopped working on it.. .he should release the source code, so hte buttons for snesce can be remapped and the transparencies can be turned on or off... I'm lpaying supermario all stars at about full speed on this thing and some games (i.e. zombies ate my neighbors) run too fast almost...<sigh>
