PQ Internet Multiplayer With Real People. Period.

PQ Internet Multiplayer With Real People. Period.

Postby Warren » May 12, 2001 @ 5:49pm

This is what we all want. PocketQuake multiplayer over the Internet against other Pocket PC people. What we need is for http://www.pocketquake.com to make a server for only pocket pc people (if we play with people playing on a desktop, us pocket pc people will loose so embarrassingly). If http://www.pocketquake.com makes a server just for pocket pc people, then it would be fair. I need to know some things though. Note that I have a Casio EM-500. What modem should I get if I choose to get one? Does NetZero support wireless Internet? How do I get NetZero on my Casio? Are there any other free wireless ISPs that would work on pocket pcs?? Thanks.

Unfortunately, there isn't a way to prevent desktop Quake players from playing on a pocketQuake server.

There are only a couple wireless companies that provide enough bandwidth to get a decent ping with pocketQuake. Anything below 28.8 would pretty much suck.

Don't count on a free ISP to provide wireless service or support for PPC. Most of them require a proprietary frontend in order to connect.

The only ISP I have tested is MSN.

I could protect normal people from connecting in a certain way.... i could make a website that can only be accessed from the Pocket PC. that website would contain connection information for the quake server (password protected)... it would work, and would disallow people without a wireless pocket pc connection to connect.... but there would still be people that would get the ip from their wireless pocket pc and connect to the server using their computer... but this method would at least limit those.

I've got some source for connecting via SOCKS4 & 5 proxy servers that I may someday add into PQ. The idea being to allow PQ to connect to an internet server via a proxy server on the home PC through ActiveSync (just as a way to get more people to participate). One possible way of keeping out non PQ clients would be by version number. I assume that the clients send their version of Quake to the server. I could simply make a Win32 build of Quake for the server that would only allow the PQ version numbers to connect (being that I set them so low (0.061, etc) they would not overlap WinQuake or other Quake versions).

Dan East

Dan is too smart. Why didn't I think of that before? When a mod for Half-Life updates, the version number is checked before entering the server, so it won't get messed up. You can do the same thing for PocketQuake. Does anyone know of a free wireless ISP for PPCs?

Yeah, but what if I WANT to play against a PC. Some of my friends really suck at Quake, so me playing on a PPC would be somewhat of a handicap. :)

Guess what! I just read that NetZero and Juno can work on Pocket PCs! It said that you need to download "rasSPY" for decoding of the username and password. Does anyone know what this is? And if it works? Thanks.

Too bad my 19200 baud connection via wireless sprint pcs would kill my ping if on PQ, but if everyone is HPB i guess it wouldnt matter now would it? :)

I am not sure if you all know this or not but the IPAQ Dual Slot Expansion Pack just arrived in stores today. That means under tcp/ip you can play PQ. Now have I tried it..not succussfully. At least when I ping for players there were none. Maybe Dan can give me some pointers. Thanks.

I play multiplayer PQ with my iPaq over ethernet (with my desktop and laptop). I just put the game files directly on my iPaq. It works very well.

Dan East

Oh, you asked a question. :) You have to specify the IP address and port of the server. Is the iPaq connected directly to the internet via the ethernet connection, or are you using a Proxy Server on your PC? If the latter, then I don't know of a way to get it to work.

Dan East
