Will there ever be a Palm OS version of snails???

Postby » Feb 18, 2002 @ 4:21am

GameBoy Advance could EASILY handle snails. It's processor may be lacking compared to a 206mhz StrongARM, but then it doesn't need to be as powerful. Computers & PPCs are general all-rounders, using a cpu to deal with the work (and 3D card if available) while consoles are custom-built gaming machines. Thus, while it's cpu may be slower, it has plenty of additional hardware for graphics, maths, etc. How do you think that it handles Doom? I mean, the SNES had a 3.58mhz cpu but also still managed to play Doom. While Snails is undoubtedly a gaming great, the maths is not so complex that it wouldn't run brilliantly on GBA. Even the original GB had a version of 'Worms'! Programming for a console is different from on a PC, in that you don't just delegate all the work to the cpu. Porting Snails is definitely feasible, and would not require any extra hardware in cartridge.

Another thing, though: To release Snails for GBA is NOT just the same as releasing on another format like PPC, palm, PC, Mac, etc as Nintendo requires developers to become licensees before they're allowed to release software. That's why their cartridges bear the "Nintendo seal of quality". It's why the quality of their console's games tend to be slightly higher, but there are fewer of them compared to competitor's systems, as Nintendo doesn't let just anyone develop for their system. Nintendo are also very fussy about certain things and tend to want to maintain some control over games (gore, family values, etc). However, i think that this shouldn't affect Snails much, and it would be a good idea to port it. GBA is one of the fastest selling systems ever, and releasing Snails for it would help expose it to a very wide audience.

I think the lowered detail is because of the RAM needed. The n64 version of Doom also has lowered detail, so I guess that makes the Pocket PC a superior 3d gaming device ;)...

Well, I firmly belive Snails on GBA would kick way more ass than Snails on Palm. I don't know anything about development for GBA, but I imagine we wouldn't be handling the direct port ourseleves. Most likely another design house that is already set up to handle all that crap would be added as a third party.

I don't think Snails would have any problems running on GBA. W*rms Armageddon ran on the Gameboy Colour.

The GBA has approximately the same capabilities as the SNES.

The main differences are:
The processor (16.7 mHz ARM7 for the GBA vs a 3.58 mHz 65C816 variant in the SNES)
Memory (The GBA has a whole bunch more, plus a GBA cart can hold something like 32 megs while the most I've seen in an SNES game is 4meg)
True-color modes (The biggest difference: In addition to the tile-based modes that the SNES and GBA both have, the GBA also has two 15-bit color non-tiled modes (240x160 and 160x128) as well as an 8-bit non-tiled mode (240x160))

Either way, the GBA could easily handle Snails.

BTW, the GBA port of Doom probably didn't use any of the graphics hardware that the GBA has - Only the hardware sprites would be useful in a game like Doom.[/list]
Most people don't know that "A highly technical term" is actually a highly technical term used to describe something that doesn't mean anything

That person thinks he's a "l337 h4X0r" (an "elite hacker" for anyone who doesn't understand). The same sort of person would say *nix to refer to Unix and stuff... Either that or the person is just bored.
