I guess I'll give my view too. ORBot and Randall are both right about some things. We can't know exactly how life was back then, but we CAN use the factual evidence we have to get a rough guess: it's better than what we would have without that guess. Sure, we'll never perfectly interpret the bible, but if a rough guess is the best we can do, can we ignore such a guess? Knowing what life was like and experiencing life are two different things. I guess we could just call up Paul and ask him what life was like back then. We can't, so we need to guess on our own by what we DO know.
