Hi PDA Scumm fans

Following <a href="http://www.pocketmatrix.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=15251">your testing</a>, ScummVM release 0.6.0 has been released ! You can download it from http://www.scummvm.org

Main news

* Support for Broken Sword 1
* Support for Broken Sword 2 (experimental in CE build)
* Support for Broken Sword 1 and 2 video cutscenes (I'll include a tutorial to encode a PDA friendly version of these cutscenes shortly)
* Support for Flight of the Amazon Queen (given as freeware in 0.6.0)
* Whole new CE backend code - should be faster and more reliable than before, or at least easier to maintain
* VGA (E800 and such) devices support - if you wish to play a 320x240 game in 640x480 mode, edit the game properties and change the display driver to 2x, AdvMame2x or DotMatrix - other scalers are not properly supported yet (thanks to Copy for the tests).

As always, check http://arisme.free.fr/PocketScumm for the latest fixes

edit 03/17/04 : add filters tests for VGA devices

Savegame bug ?

Postby Geared2003 » Mar 17, 2004 @ 8:15am

Thanks for your great job ! Unfortunately, I have a nasty bug with the latest version (release) with broken sword2 : I cannot load savegames. When I load a savegame and tap on the restore button, scummvm freezes completely... It didn't happen with the previous beta. I am using a Sigmarion3 ( HPC with Ce.net 4.1 ; by the way, on this machine, you can use both the hpc and pocketpc arm builds with some additional dlls and wincesoft gapi). Maybe a workaround would be to use the command line to load savegames, but I don't get it ... :(

yup, I noticed that. A fixed version will be available shortly for all devices. But since you can use the PocketPC ARM build, you can check this

more broken sword 2 bugs ?

Postby Geared2003 » Mar 17, 2004 @ 7:53pm

Thanks a lot for your quick reply ! Savegames are now fully functional. I still have a problem though: Broken Sword 2 works very good with Win32 PC Scummvm, but often freezes with Pocketscumm. Actually the beginning of the game works quite good (with minor bugs) with Pocketscumm, but troubles begin when I reach the Quaramonte episode. I thought it was due to the beta version but problems still happen with the last version... Maybe Broken Sword2 is a bit "resource hungry" even for my 400 Mhz Xscale processor ? has anyone a better experience ? Is Broken Sword 1 fully playable with PocketScumm ?
Anyway, thanks a lot, Arisme, for your efforts and bringing such a nice freeware to the CE community...!

yes, it's a problem with memory allocation - I'm building a user configurable patch, it should reduce the problems

New experimental ARM build for Broken Sword 2 available here

http://arisme.free.fr/PocketScumm/binar ... PC_ARM.zip

if things get weird, you can play with the memory_cleanup_threshold value in the [sword2] section of scummvm.ini (usually making it higher will solve problems)

Broken Sword 1 should behave better btw

0.6.0 for Jornada 525 (8bits)

Postby meste » Mar 18, 2004 @ 8:16am

Arisme,

I downloaded the latest version and the colors are weird on my Jornada 525 which is a 8bit color machine

Is that so? or you intend to make a version for 8bit as well

thanks,

I'm very interested by reports from 8 bits testers, since all the rendering code changed ! can you make some screenshots, and tell me what the second About box (in the launcher) displays ?

the about box says:

scummVM 060 (built on March 15 2004 00:40.43)
supports: vorbis MP3 MPEG2 etc

then it says: using SDL driver windib display 240x320

but during the game it is very slow, slower than 0.5.7 or 0.5.1.

I don't know how to send you a screen capture, but I can tell you that the colors are fuzzy and weird, like it was not created for 8bit like the previous versions. Tell me if you know how can I capture the screen but it won't help you much. If this helps you, the introduction, the logo of the game etc seems to works well from the colours point of view!

you're right, I'm using SDL automatic dithering now, but of course it's less good (since now it works with a 16 bits surface)

I think you can make captures with this program http://www.pocketpccity.com/software/po ... ketpc.html - just to have an idea of how bad it looks

and was GAPI working with the previous versions ?

anyway stay around, I need paletted devices testers if I want to make some changes

Broken Sword 2

Postby Geared2003 » Mar 18, 2004 @ 1:15pm

Thanks for the last version ( damn, you are quick !); this version seems to solve many troubles indeed; I still have one problem with video transitions (with or without the converted sequences fromm Scummvm.org in the game directory): the game crashes and a debugger window appears with the following message: buildlookup failed- memory management failure". I have increased the memory_threshold to 16384000 in scummvm.ini. Before starting pocketscumm I have approx 35000 Kb of free memory.

I tried with that screen capture but not working: when I run scummVM all shortcuts are override so cannot open the application to save screen

Anyway, the colours are upside-down, the first screen in BASS has a lot of red - you can see the character but very few when it comes to detail

My worry is that it is very slow, compared to previous versions, whic bye the way, worked well with the GAPI (I mean normal colors etc) - I know that my machine is a slow one, but compared to 0.5.7, this new version is 2-3 times slower!

I am looking forward to any improvement,

Geared> if you get the build lookup error, try to start a new game then load, or try to reload before starting a new game. It should work one way or the other

To Arisme and Meste

Postby Geared2003 » Mar 18, 2004 @ 7:49pm

-Arisme, thanks for your explanation but I didn' t catch what you exactly mean...When I get the error message, I have to kill the Scummvm process, because it won't let me restart any game at all.

-Meste, I am not an expert but I think your problem with the last build of PocketScumm might be due to the small amount of memory of your jornada 525: 16 Mb RAM is really not much nowadays and I think the memory requirement of the 0.6 build is much higher: I can't start scummvm 0.6 at all on my Casio BE300, which also has a small memory. Therefore,I am using the special Christmas build on the Be300, and it runs like a charm, for example with "amazon queen". So my suggestion would be to leave this special Christmas edition available to all users who have "low memory" machines and still want to try some newer games... Of course, if Arisme has a better solution... but if we want new features and games for PocketScumm it might be better to forget older "low end" machines - it must also be a nightmare for the developper ! ( many commercial apps are only available for newer ARM only pocketpcs, so it is nearly a miracle that we still get so many different versions of Pocketscumm: MIPs, SH3, HPCs...)
