Pocket TV or Pocket Divx

Pocket TV or Pocket Divx

Postby Anon0808 » Sep 10, 2002 @ 9:58am

I have an ipaq 3630 and 256 mb CF card. I have been ripping dvds into mpegs and watching them on my ipaq. I am happy with the quality of the mpegs and for example have ripped The Matrix so it is very watchable and it takes up about 220mb which i thought was quite good.

However i always read in this forum people ripping DVD's and watching them on Pocket divx pressumably after ripping them as *.avi's. What are the benefits of using pocket divx (*.avi's) over using pocket tv (*.mpeg)?

Thanks in advance

Your file size in divx will be by far smaller.

I use Divx and WMV only on both my units.

Yes there is a great quality in MPEG , but remember what you start with for encoding will greatly affect your veiwing with the end product.

I have seen Divx movies almost as sharpe as DVD and some you were not able to see to save your life.

There is a very good walk throught for how to encode a movie to Divx for Pocket use at this link here.

It was easy enough to follow, and after you have mastered that you can tinker with the settings to suit your veiwing taste.

**note** I rotate video 90 degree ahead of time so Pocket Divx Player does not have to. Not sure if it saves on the chip or not but it works for me.

P.S.

For tips on how to rip DVD to DIVX;-)

MechCommander, it does that because it's trying to cache the entire file into program memory. The larger the file the longer it will take to open it with caching enabled. Disable caching it lower the amount of memory it uses up. That might fix the problem, but I'm not sure.

Ya, there are many of filters and things that you can use in DivX. But you just have to play around with the settings a bit until you understand exactly what each one does and how it effects the output file.
