XP major BUG

XP major BUG

Postby Loki » Sep 15, 2002 @ 2:04pm

Yes, I know its off-topic, but since its so serious, I decided to post it here.

This is not a hoax

I did a little searching and found how to use the exploit and it works.

I cant believe M$ hold this for so long, the only patch available was SP1, but as you know SP1 isn't that compatible with "backup" versions of XP.

Well, what do you think would happen if everyone knew about it and there was no fix? Lots of people would have ended up with completely screwed up systems and loss of important files...

What I find strange though is that you have to install this HUGE service pack while this bug only affects one simple line of code. I editted it out manually and tested it afterwards and everything was fine :\

Do be careful when reading GRC's page, he exaggerates EVERYTHING. Yes, this hole is true, and been out for a while. Yes, Gibson once again overplays the problems this hole causes.

He's got an ego the size of Texas, so make sure you have other sources like SecurityFocus.

Loki, but he exaggerates the affects of problems. This time, granted, he didn't.

IE6 doesn't have the best rendering engine. Sites design AROUND the problems of IE6's engine. Opera also has the fastest engine out there, and very rarely do I run into a webpage that can't be used at all in Opera. It loads faster, even on a 1.6ghz, and more responsive than IE. Enough to notice a difference.

Not to mention 2 clicks will disable popups (though I run Proxomitron which gets rid of popups, always nice to have an extra layer on those shadier sites)
