I just figured out how to do this last night, and have been encoding all my movies since. You need virtualdub and also pocket divx player. Both are free, and both are extremely essential apps, if you really want to make the most of your pda.
Just follow the guide they have on this site, but I just want to make one addition. Under video>framerates select the option to process every other frame (decimate by 2). Most PDAs will start dropping frames when the framerate gets too high, any framerate above 10 is acceptable, with 25+ as my cut off.
Just remember, it looks tough at first, but after you are all done with the settings, you can save it as a virtual dub profile, and just load it up in the future.
Also, like someone above said, you can use windows media encoder, which is a lot simpler to use and will produce a file that can be read by windows media player. However, you'll find that windows encoder will only be able to encode a handul of videos, generally just the mpegs. Virtual dub does everything, and the final result is a lot better under divx than wmv. You also don't need to download a seperate profile, you can just use the "color for large pda" (something like that) built into the encoder.
Again, I strongly recommend using virtual dub and pocket divx to run the videos, in the long run it will pay off. I saw ocean's eleven last nite while on my bed, with my PDA. I streamed it wirelessly right off my desktop computer. Was very nice, didn't drop a single frame, def something to show off to your friends :)
