MultiMediaCard upgrade on ipaq

MultiMediaCard upgrade on ipaq

Postby jont » Jan 8, 2003 @ 3:33pm

There's a storage card which slots into the top of my Ipaq 3850 which appears to give me an additional 8Mb over the internal RAM of the device. I'd like to replace this with a 128M storage device - do I need a "128Mb MultiMediaCard module" like this one from Crucial?

Will I be able to use such a card for real-time listening/viewing of MP3's and movies?

Thanks in advance, and apologies for not reading the manual!

That's your Secure Digital slot. You *should* be able to use MMC along with SD, but my MP3 player takes MMC (at least that's what I've always been told) and it looks not even close to the SD cards.

You'll be able to get bigger Secure Digital cards anyway, take al ook for that.

(By the way, your talking about the memory card in the little black part of the iPaq right?)

Ta for the quick reply sponge.

Yep I'm talking about the black slot in at the top of the sleeveless Ipaq.

So MM cards are different to SD cards? I think the 8Mb one I've got in the Ipaq at the mo looks like this:

zinger: Your probably right. I should dig it up and scan the card in, if I only knew where it was.

[edit] It's a SmartMedia card. Bah, damn industry buzzwords :P

Jon,
I'm not 100% sure about the speed of the SD slot. I thought that I read it reads/writes at MMC speed but I can't find the site that I read that. I ran Vobenchmark on both my 8MB MMC and 128MB SD last night. The SD card was faster on every test except one (Small Block Random Access Read I think.) This could be due to the format of the card. Either way both types are more than fast enough for real-time playing of audio and video. SD is available in higher sizes.

www.bananapc.com
128 MMC - $53.00
128 SD - $49.00
