Emulation on the PPC

Emulation on the PPC

Postby SmarterThanSam » Mar 25, 2003 @ 5:12am

What kinds of speeds are you all getting on emulators for all the consoles that are currently available for the PPC?

Im assuming that most of the newer PPC's can get full speed on NES and GBC. I had an old MobilePro 770 HPC that could run most GBC games at full speed if not pretty close. Just wanna make sure though.

What emulator are you talking about specifically? Most emulators emulating old platforms (ex. NES) run perfectly well. SNES is a bit of a stretch, and is on the verge of unplayable.

Well really just any emulator in general. I know that any old runs well and anything not that old but not really new (ie Snes) chugs along.

Gameboy Color and NES are both full, 60 fps, speed. SuperNES is playable at around 30 to 45 frames per second if you can really get the settings just right and free up lots of RAM and with no sound. Playstation runs around 10 frames per second, depending on the game really. Some Playstation games, like Final Fantasy Chronicles, plays reasonable well at about 17 fps. Genesis is not playable, but I've got some inside information on a new Genesis emulator that's going to be released sometime soon (like, months, maybe next quarter) that should play very smoothly. Around the speed of current SuperNES, so 30 to 45 fps, but much more playable than the current emulator available. And that is simply speculation, as it's not really complete yet at all.

Anything pre-16bit runs perfectly. Sixteen bit systems run playably, and 32bit is, well, just a novelty.

Does anyone know about how much faster an ARM processor is at SNES Emulation than an X-Scale?[/code]

Not significantly. Maybe 5 to 20 percent faster.
