Everyone knows what the newest version of DirectX is, and Impossible Creatures does NOT _REQUIRE_ DirectX9, DirectX9 is simply the version that comes on the CD that they ask you to install.

What graphics card do you have?

I have and NVidia chipset. I don't know what version it is.

When I was installing Impossible Creatures it didn't install Direct X. Then it gave me an error report that it couldn't find Direct X 9. Then I tried installing it on my laptop and it worked. On my desktop I had to get new Video Software for Impossible Creatures.

Moose, you don't understand. Impossible Creatures and other DX9 games were made using the DirectX 9 API, and thus don't work with anything lower. Just because they do use DirectX 9 doesn't mean they have to take advantage of all the DX9 features, such as Pixel Shader 2.0 or whatnot.

Need proof? 3DMark03 works on my computer with a Geforce 2.

Games which require DirectX 9 hardware won't be out for a loooooooong time. Heck, my Geforce (DirectX 7 hardware) can still play practically any game, including those which require DirectX 8 or 9. I don't know of any games out now which require DirectX 8 hardware.

The whole point of new DirectX versions is the features that it adds. It may require the DirectX9 API, but that doesn't mean it uses DirectX9's special features.
