ActiveSync over WiFi

ActiveSync over WiFi

Postby sponge » Apr 2, 2003 @ 5:51am

Is it possible to sync with my ActiveSync at home, from places outside of my local network? Would be very nice to be able to get my email, etc, from school. I know it can be done from the local LAN, but not from others.

there

actually,I'm not sure if that will work, but it's worth a try. As long as there is no firewall it should... Go ahead and test.

AS will accept a connection from a foreign IP? Sounds a bit insecure, but I'll check it out. I already use it since NetBIOS name resolution is a real pain in the ass.

I know this may be overkill...but...

I have a VPN set up at home, so I just VPN in first and then sync...

Anyway, I think you are going to run into several problems if you try to go direct.

First, you have to be able to resolve to the PC at home, so let's assume it is a static IP from your ISP...so far that ain't tough.

Second, you have to sync over IP, and I don't know what ports that uses. My assumption is that at the very least your school's firewall will block them.

Then you have to worry about you ISP blocking the ports. Cox doesn't block ANYTHING which is nice, so that probably won't be a problem.

Lastly, I would be concerned about packet loss. I never looked into ASync, but I would guess that it uses funky ports and runs over UDP instead of TCP for speed. I would also guess that MS didn't expect much packet loss because it is usally done over a LAN, so I don't know how it will respond.

Probably not the most useful post, but just some thoughts.

Let us know what happens and what you learn.

EGAD! You piqued my interest so I went diggin' around.

Turns out that ActiveSync uses BOTH TCP and UDP...on the following LONG list of ports...

990 RAPI
999 ?
5678 Sync Info
5679 Pulse
137 NetBIOS Naming Service
138 NetBIOS Datagram Service
139 NetBIOS Session Service

I can almost assure you that ANYTING NetBIOS is going to be blocked.
