is the infrared port fast enough to play? (for example snails)

Plenty fast enough, 4 times as fast as most dial-up internet connections. It offers a range of about 10 feet, too.

But Snails doesn't offer IRDA multiplayer. It does offer 2 player on the same device. IRDA multiplayer in a turnbased game is kind of redundant.
